What is with the ugly 16-bit smoke effects? I have the in game stuff all on highest and 32bit. Played with drivers and game settings... but the smoke looks 16-bit to me. I have a x800xt in my other box and not seeing the same thing...using 77.77 WHQL from NV.

here it is on another map with no aa / af, High quality and no other optimizations on in CP.

are you sure your not seeing it on your ati card? i see that '16bit' smoke as well in my gaming but i thought that was just the way the game was coded.

How about a x800 screenshot?

Try adjusting gamma settings. The game uses the Quake 3 engine which has known problems with smoke banding on all cards including ATI.

Im waiting on some memory for the other machine, the x800 is obviously in a AGP machine so I cannot swap it over to here. Can anyone else take a ss with an ATI card in the meanwhile and post it? I guess I am being more picky with the 7800 with the shimmering issues so every little glitch I see I'm like...grr wtf?

Maybe it was there and I just didnt notice, I dunno.

It's the game.

Yeah I'm pretty sure that's just the way the game's smoke looks. I've noticed that too on every card I've played it on (4600Ti, 6800GT, and 7800GTX).

I know what you mean. It seems since I've changed from my x800xt pe to these, the AF quality is not nearly as good of quality in games like COD and BF2.

It seems some kind of texture compression to me, not 16 bit textures :S
( like the Sky in Q3 ;) )

Dunno, looks like crap in any case. I really dont remember my X800 or x850xt pe doing this - and I've played alot of COD. I had no compression on - however there may be some optimization with these drivers 77.77 in HQ that 78.03 may fix... I'll hold out.

Honestly, if NV doesnt address this cheatin' or "over" optimizing I'm headed back to ATI when the mystical, magical R520 comes. I dont care about a few frames to be honest I want a quality image and so far the 7800 GTX just hasnt wowed me. I just played Madden 2006 and the facemasks on the helmets just dont look to be antialiased properly. Even with 8XS, SSAA and 16af on HQ the face masks are not smoothed. ATIs AA is still much better hands down. Its a nice card and all but no reviews said anything about the Shimmer and if this is 16 bit in the smoke thats just lame. Let the product sell itself drop the damn optimizations already - the 7800 GTX is fast enough lets have some nice IQ and just let the card work already. I feel like I have a Ferrari (hardware) with a set of lawnmower tires (drivers).

no dude, i did get that on my 9600xt. the compression is something the game itself uses by default, not something you enable.

Ok, I believe u if you've played it recently... any chance someone with an ATI could snap a few screenies tho?

thanks

Are you sure you're using the profiles correctly. It looks like AA is working for me. Madden 2006 looks great on the 7800GTX especially since there isn't any shimmering with it. :)

Edit: Also, there a few more that I posted a while back in the screenshot thread where things aren't as zoomed in.

Mine looks like garbage this is 1280x1024 4xaa/16xaa HQ Supersampling. Almost looks like shimmering on the facemasks when it's moving....

I play (and the screencap was taken) using the below settings but I'm not sure I'd be able to do that with just a single card:

1600x1200, HQ, 8xS AA, 16xAF, GAA on, TAA: Super Sampling

sorry to once again butt in but dude, your just being way too picky. you can't completely get rid of aliasing. i went through that same phase (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=54318&highlight=shimmering) when i was trying to get rid of aliasing in mafia and phantasy star 100%. but not even 16xs can completely get rid of aliasing. all we can do to lessen it is raise aa and res.

What drivers? Tried 77.77 and 78.01 betas

the facemasks just shimmer bad and the more I see it, the more it's bothering me. Using LCD native 1280x1024, tried 8x still no better...

nice post... yup thats the same type of thing that really bothers me after using ATI since 9700 pro (then 9800 pro, 9800 XT, x800xt pe, X850XT PE to 7800 GTX)...never got that with ati.

so can anyone else confirm this doesn't happen on ati hardware? i was under the impression you couldn't completely get rid of aliasing...

I just sold an X850XT PE and I never had this in any other games I played that I see it in with the 7800 GTX. I didnt get Madden 2006 till today tho....

you can see that same sort of aliasing on these screenshots. so either these people were using nvidia as well or it's normal...

The screencap in this thread was with the 77.76s. I currently have those installed but I've mainly been using the 77.77s. I just installed the 77.76s tonight to test something and decided to just stay put with those hoping that tomorrow or soon the beta driver will be released.

hmm, OWA, you seem to have a system with ati. *wink, wink*

What level were these taken from? I was going to post a couple of screenshots from the X800 Pro but had trouble finding anywhere that had that much smoke. I was using a cheat so that I could go to any level and go to any area. One issue is that I may not trigger events the way I doing it so if the heavy smoke was from something like that I'll need to play it I guess.

I've included a few screenshots that show a little of the same thing as yours but the smoke was so thin, it's not nearly as obvious. One shot is zoomed in on the smoke rising from a building in the distance. If you post a save game from the area you took the screenshots, I'll try to use that same area.

X800 Pro / 5.8s (3rd pic probably shows it best).

It didnt matter - I tossed a smoke grenade and snapped them and they are on different levels so it wasn't the area that had anything to do with it. I was using 4x/16x/ Hq with SSAA enabled, tried 8xs and no aa/af but the smoke always looks like that with my card. Your banding is much less with the X800 in those caps anyways.
