Yay for a first post!
I will believe it when I see it, ATI has been lacking alot lately. Plus toms isn't saying it but rather their "sources" are which means jack...
You know its strange for someone to join just to say this :bleh:
anyway i myself believe its going to be faster , but that wont matter until the actual boards hit the stores .. also i'm still uncomfartable with the master & slave idea of the Crossfire. gonna wait to see how it turns out too.

Its not a bad first post. At least it was in the right forum. :P
What I find funny is that this comes from THG. THG has always been known to overhype nvidia cards and use benchmarks that favor them.
Sorry, but the linked story reads like an Inq "scoop". It is geting dangerously close to the situation we had a few years back where 3dfx was proud to be as fast, sometimes faster, in a paper launch product than an NVIDIA card that had been on the market four months already. If the release of the R520 is end of September/start of October, that gives the G70 nearly four months head start in sales, OEM contracts, fab price declines, driver updates (come on release 80), etc.
Anyway, the positive sign is that ATI thinks they can start up the marketing machine through sites like THG to hype a launch. That means they have a viable product. Expect more from the PR guys...
luks like he's a fan of ATI
The R520 "should" be faster than the 7800GTX, if it is not, I consider it a failure. But remember, nVidia probably has an Ultra with 512mb up its sleeve. Don't you find it strange that the PCB obviously has room for 512mb, but no announcement yet? I think they are waiting for the R520 to hit.

ATI investors will not like this later today, the creditors and investors are not very happy with ATI telling them all sort of different stories. The first thing Dave Orton said to the investors back on 31 May that he was very confident that R520 cards will be available in stock by end of August. Well it never happened as a few weeks later the news came up that R520 has very serious yield problems, had 3 respins to fix the problems etc. Sampsa interviewed Dave Orton last week and he admitted that ATI has problems with Crossfire, R530 and R520, not to mentioned R520 had 7 respins that ATI never told the investors about it. Then 2 days after the interview was posted on Internet, ATI posted a profit warning for Q4 2005, expected around $100M losses and then 1 day later, a news came up about R520 silicon was "Fantastic". That did not added up from Dave interview, he said the R520 clocks had been finalised and admitted that the silicon still has problems last week.
Well if Dave keep his word that R520 will be in stock by October, I will believe when I see it in stock anywhere online.

Yes,512MB is ok and all but what kind of performance can an Ultra offer?Judging by the overclocked 7800GTX's its 10-15% maximum.

Umm 32 pipelines maybe?

Nvidia just can't spit out new high end chips every 4 months.

With better cooling some even with stock people hitting 500+ from 430 , so with dual slot stock cooling we could easly see a little bit over 500mhz on core probably...
im grabbin a r520 unless it has heat issues. The shimmering w/ nvidia is ridiculous, and fixing it for HQ only is insulting.
I want IQ, and that means I gotta buy ati.

Are you religious? If not, you should consider it, because you are going on blind faith here.
First, The shimmering as we know it is fixed in 78.03.
Second, Have you seen the image quality of the r520?
Don't get me wrong I would love to see a part that is superior to the 7800GTX, but at this moment in time everything is pure speculation.

Hmm.. intresting.
Performance: i can understand, every company claims its products r faster than the other.
Image Quality: How can/will it be superior/better in Image Quality?

ATI stock is up about 8% in the last two days. I think ATI investors think the stock has bottomed and is now a good buy. I disagree...
ok if the r520 is so great why is ati taping out the r580 now.... so soon to launch of the r520

But performance will not really benefit much, at least based on the results of other products with 512mb.
I am expecting something with perhaps more pipes or vertex/shader units or higher speeds or something else as an Ultra.
The GTX is a great card regardless and the additional speed of an r520 will likely not lead to a lot of switches coz of the whole SLi/Crossfire thinger I wouldn't think.
Dell itself currently has no immediate plans to replace the flagship dual gpu setup in its XPS lineup. It will have a full fledged XPS lineup in the next couple of months and I am expecting nvidia cards to continue to be present in most of the higher end ones.

The shimmering has only been fixed in High Quality mode. I find that ridiculous. Nvidia knows we play at Quality. The average and even more avid gamers play @ Quality. So they fixed it for that 8% of users that use HQ, the other 92% of us are screwed.
I have not seen the r520 IQ, but it can't possibly be worse than the G70, and going by past generations, odds are it will be better. :D

Because they know nvidia is gonna launch a card after the r520 to dethrone it, so they are prepared to act back. (And continue the oversaturation of the gpu market)
Just like the x800 xt hit and then the x850 xt.

The x800xt hit the market?
More like slid in the back door several months late for us consumers :(
