No, according to Dave Baumann (http://www.beyond3d.com/forum/showpost.php?p=554640&postcount=16) from Beyond 3D, the news is wrong.

R580 will be a Q2 2006 product and doesn't really hold much interest since R600 with unified shader architecture and DX10 is coming Q4 2006.

Yep. Except its wgf 2.0 not dx10 ;) . It's honestly pretty pointless to grab a g70 or r520, they're over kill for 99% of todays games and wont be nearly enough for blockbusters of 2006 @ max details and high res w/ aa/af.

G80/r600 are the next smart puchase.

If your an enthusiast, by all means grab something, but price/performance wise, you'll be ticked at yourself for getting one of these now if you dont plan to upgrade next year when the real cards come out.

Actually the 7800GTX is far from overkill, on a single card I can't run FEAR or even BF2 at max possible settings so I don't see how its nearly overkill. Heck even WoW suffers horribly if I go to the max settings possible...

Unified Shaders is not the next coming, thats what ATI wants you to believe but there is NO performance gain from using it at all.
