According to this test the best are:

KAV Personal Pro
Norton Anti-Virus
NOD32 Anti-Virus
McAfee VirusScan

anyway they do not provide how much system resources they need.

Norton runs in the background still if you just "turn it off" you need to kill it through device manager to get rid of it totally, which is more then I wish to do. My favorite is AntiVir, uses almost no resources (16MB when set to search all files by default) and finds things instantly.

We get McAfee VirusScan Enterprise for free for life from school and I have to say that I'm very impressed with it. It doesn't take up too many resources and does a great job of capture and removal.

I ran McAfee Virus Scan On-line for many years.
But the latest version/update put 5 start-up's in msconfig and told me GameSpy Arcade was spyware.
Enough of McAfee, I switched to Avast and will never go back!!!
So far, Avast has been rock solid stable (with only 1 start-up entry in msconfig).

Symantec Corporate is the shizzle. I run v10 for both x32 and x64 (university provided...Symantec is located like 5 minutes from my school)

Never have any probs with it...takes 19.5 megs of memory. Can't tell the difference with it on the system or off, so I like it! And v10 does a decent job w/spyware, too!

I prefer AVG... it finds the most, is the easiest to use and the easiest to disable. Plus its free.

I just install it on my machine, disable the services and then use it to scan downloads and once in a while scan my windows or documents and settings folder. I work in a PC repair shop so I constantly have to deal with machines that have Norton (2001-2005) and various versions of McAfee and they are all pretty horrible. They absolutely destroy system performance, making them unusable some times. They cause lots of headaches with updates. They miss a LOT of the things that AVG finds quickly. And on top of all that, they (especially NAV) are prone to errors and corrupt installs\updates that make it impossible to even uninstall the program without searching some knowledgebase for a removal tool... and believe it or not, they usually have time limits on them so the removal tools can no longer be downloaded or even run after a certain date. Meaning, you need to wait for new versions and every time you need to remove one, you have to search and hope theres one available.

Norton and McAfee can go to hell... AVG has given me no problems since ive started using it.

lol jAkUp. But reformatting doesn't prevent your important files from getting infected!

I was still using McAfee 7.0 Pro (bought it a couple years ago and still works without a subscription), then I switched to AVG which I liked better.
AVG won't install on 64-bit XP, so now I'm using Avast. Out of those three, I still like AVG.

I have been using Avast ever since my experiment with x64 as Avast was one of the only to support real-time scanning in 64-bit. Norton and McAfee still require manual scans.

Anyway, it was free. One istaller for both versions of Windows and even though I am running 32-bit, I stuck with Avast as it has been less intrusive and obnoxious than McAfee.

I may try AVG after the positive reviews here.

Yeah AVG seems to work well on my wife's laptop. Especially for a free product. :)

Been using Avast Pro for the past several months but have still gotten hit by virus' on occasion. Looking to switch to Treadmicro Pro soon seeing as they have the best online virus scanner on the web.
