What do you think?

It took me 4 hours just to get the method of replacing textures down. This manhack skin was more of a test than anything. All I did was make the metal darker and change the lense color to green. As I'm sure you guessed, this was inspired by Fakefactory's character skins.

Feel free to post any Half Life 2 content you have created.

Its 2:00AM and I'm about to pass out... :zzzz:

Looks good... could definitely be better but I think it looks better than the original.

if you'd tell me how, I will try

This is what you need:

Half Life 2 (duh)
.net Framework (for GCFscape)
GCFscape (http://nemesis.thewavelength.net/index.php?c=76#p76)
Photoshop (or any other program that can edit VTF files)
VTF Pugin for Photoshop (http://forums.filefront.com/showthread.php?t=211706)

Thats about it. If you don't have the full version of photoshop, then download the trial.

1. Make sure steam is not running then open GCFscape.
2. Open "source materials". You can find it under Valve/Steam/SteamApps.
3. Expand hl2/materials/models/airboat then right click Airboat001.vtf and click extract. Here is a pic of what you should see.

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/attachment.php?attachmentid=13204&stc=1

4. After you have extratcted the VTF file (I just extract them to the desktop), open it up with photoshop.
5. Make what changes you want and save the file (just write your name on part of it).
6. Create a file structure on the desktop that goes materials/models/airboat and place your edited Airboat001.vtf in the airboat folder.
7. Finally, place materials in "Valve\Steam\SteamApps\{Your Steam ID}\half-life 2\hl2".

Now load up half life 2 and find an airboat. It should have the custom texture you created.

Here is a test pistol skin I did.

Post screenshots of the skins you have created.

Hopefully you are able to follow this. Good luck.

lol its made of two fire sprites that cross each other. Valve must be really lazy cause its not that hard to create a fire emitter. At least not for "professional" game designer. *shrug* I dunno.

Wow this is fun! Heres what I managed to create:

I changed the sight color from green to cyan, and the pistol grip has a dark red tint to it. Plus, the random "GUN" on the top :P

lol, nice :D

I like the grip. I wanna put "Not to be mistaken for a real firearm" on the side of mine.

I've been trying to clean up some of the worse skins in the game. Here is a slightly improved version of the cactus. Notice the purple dirt on the original. :wtf:

:p I'm going to make some textures from scratch to replace it. I'm also working on the other props such as bottles, chinese takeout box thingies, boots, and dolls. Just the small stuff you see scattered through City 17.

Keep us posted your progress. It'd be nice to see someone do something for the little things in the game.

Well things are slow becuase its the first textures I've ever made. I have a lot more respect for texture artist after attempting to make my own. :)

I finally found the small props texture. Thats right, its just one texture. Valve used one 512x512 texture for 11 small skins! Thats not very many pixels per skin, so I upped it to 2048x2048. The only skin I've replaced is the green wine bottle and chinese takeout box. The bottle isn't done, but I'm pretty happy with the takeout box. Here is a before and after (sorry 56kers).

wow, nice progess. what would be cool is after you've done a lot of these texture redos then making a texture pack for it.

The one beef I had with the takeout skin was that it looked too clean. It didn't fit in with the rest of the "junk" lying around.

Fixed... :D

They are some of the worst fire effects I have ever seen. It's like a ****ty 2D sprite from 1997!

Heh the other side isn't as bad.

This is the last one for tonight. It isn't finished, but I figured I'd post it anyways.
