Well ... considering you believed there was an Ultra version waiting :p

http://theinquirer.net/?article=25949

Nvidia G70 ultra would likely be very competitive to R520 XT but it would hurt G70, Geforce 7800 GTX sales and therefore Nvidia won't release it. So all of you who have been waiting for 7800 Ultra you can just forget about it.

There never was a "G70 ultra" anyway. :p

What about the G70 Super Dooper Foshizzle version though? The Inq is fun to read for a kick at times. :)

This is curious (if true). The reasoning makes no sense... why would the release of an "Ultra" hurt sales of the GTX? What are people going to do ... not buy either of them? "Oh, I just can't decide between GTX and Ultra, so I'll just go buy some Intel integrated graphics instead"???!!!

If anything, having a "Ultra" waiting in the wings is making people hold off buying a GTX ... maybe that's what the story is about ... NV getting Fudo to squash rumours of an Ultra so folks stop waiting and start spending.

Or maybe it's an availability thing... NV know that they can supply the demand for a GTX but maybe couldn't satisfy demand for an Ultra, and they want to be seen as the good guys who aren't marketing unobtainable products. More image massaging..

nVidia already said the 7800GTX IS the 7800 Ultra. A while ago. This "G70 Ultra" is a figment of peoples' imaginations.

i think nvidia releases this information to screw with ati... ati probably paniced thinking there was a faster version of the gtx and put there chip targets way to high...causing them to do a respin....nvidia knows what ati can and cant do with a curtain tech.... this is all a game that the two companies play ...

Well, I just think NVIDIA got lucky! I believe that NVIDIA had a 7800ultra up their sleeve if ATI would release a 32pipeline card that would be faster than the 7800gtx. So now that ATI is releasing only a 16pipeline card, clocked at very high frequensies, NVIDIA believes they are on the safe side and can therefore scrap the 7800Ultra and move on to developing the g80! ;)

Purely out of curiosity, WHY do you believe that?

Ugh. Spelling and grammar on that site is terrible. Maybe Athlon xp 1800 writes for them.

Because is makes sense coming from these 2 companies. They're always trying to one-up each other. Since it seems ATI is dropping the ball this round [I'm sorry but releasing something comparable to a GTX 6 months after the GTX in "limited quantities" is a failure in my book] Nvidia can rest easy. And since there's no NEED for a faster G70 they're not going to bother to deliver.

I have yet to see historical precedent to back this kind of thinking up. For now it's wishful thinking or baseless assumption and nothing more. Not like you'd know it considering how ardently this "G70 Ultra", "G71 Ultra", or "7800 Ultra" has been defended.

Then again this is the rumor forum. :D

Well, if there an Ultra in the works this is good news to GTX owners since their cards will be top-of-the-line for a little while longer :D

Yeah, I can't stand the Inq. They're so unprofessional in everything they do.

And yeah, I really don't know where this whole 7800 Ultra came from since, on nVIDIA's site, they said the GTX was the ultra/top of the line.

I guess 7800U is coming but only on winter refresh, they don't need to bother about R520 even if the top-end version comes faster. Winter refresh will be G70U vs R580 I guess.

I'm definetely waiting for G80 and R620 but that'll take a year or so for them to come.

I still believe that nVidia HAS to have a card that is superior to the GTX simple because of the R580. The GTX, unless ATI really messes up, shouldn't be able to compete with the R580. If it could, then ATI has a real problem on its hands.

So, it only makes sense for nVidia to have a 7800Ultra or equivalent in the works.

What if the next refresh is actually a 7900Ultra & no 7800s anymore??
based on G75 core & slated for winter release to counter the R580 ;)

Yeah, you mean, like, the G80?

Amazing,

The inq created a product, and cancled it all by them selfs!

They should be hired to work on the Duke Nukem Forever project!!!

I have yet to see historical precedent to back this kind of thinking up.

Historical precedent on what? That these companies will do anything to retain market share? I don't think I need to do anything to prove that.

Haha so TRUE! :D They probably got a warning from nvidia telling 'em not to create own nvidia products!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the nVIDIA site also say that they were getting rid of the Ultra name, since GT/GTX were better suited or something?

Exactly. People have been obsessed with this notion that nVidia hasn't released their flagship card yet. Guess what guys? Pretty soon, it'll just be the next generation GPU! That's how it works. I have yet to see a top-end enthusiast part be released that is immediately made obsolete only a couple of months later simply in an attempt to outdo the competition. What they released is the best the G70 has to offer. Any refresh parts or "G75s" or anything like that will fall under a different brand name, just like they always have. I am not trying to dispute that nVidia plans to make faster graphics cards - I am disputing the ridiculous notion that people should hold off on buying a 7800GTX purely out of the belief that some "7800 Ultra" is on the backburner. Following this logic, you'd never upgrade your computer, because just a few months later they'll release the 8800 or whatever they're going to call it.
