View Full Version : ATI Radeon X1800 16/24/32 pipelines
thats good news,a 32 pipelines r520 will exceed in preformance.finaly ati has got in right.now that nvidia has cancelled the 7800gtx ultra, what will nvidia do now?.
"Our friends at HKEPC has gotten themselves a R520 card and it will probably be officially known as Radeon X1800 when launch in early October. Interestingly, there are 16, 24 and 32 pipes versions but there are only 10 pieces of the 32 pipes versions exist currently. The core clock of the card is 650Mhz+ and memory at 1400Mhz. The R520 card uses 1.26ns GDDR3 memories. The 32 pipes R520 performance will exceed the GeForce 7800GTX."

I don't think they'll do much. 10 functioning chips aren't going to make ATi a lot of money or provide much competition for nVidia. It's already official that the R520 is a 16-pipe part, and I believe the clock speeds have been stated as well. The yields are far too poor for the 32-pipe part to even be feasible for mass-production.
That isn't exactly the best source I've ever seen either. :p
Ninja, can you please link me to the official info of R520 beeing 16pipe?
there is so mutch rumors about r520 it not easy to say what is right.it was the inquirer that has sayd that the r520 has 16 pipelines.there is no official info on r520.

Bah you're right...I read it on technews I think but it turns out they were just linking to the Inq. Still 16 pipes is pretty much agreed upon, it seems. No way to find out until ATi actually does something with it. Still it is a fact that the 32-pipe wonder that supposedly existed in tiny quantities will never see the retail shelf.
Oh and "X1800"? I'm sure they can do better than that.

Wouldn't X1800 actually be 101800?
worst... name... ever... I hope their wrong.
so 32piped r520 VPU's exist. good news.
how bout "11k800" or "eleven 800" for names?!?!?

How about a new naming convention? And one that doesn't involve ANY X's if at all possible, but if necessary, no more than one.

Yeah, even only after moths of production, only 10 exist :D Wonder what you'll have to pay for that edition and what would it even be called as that's way beyond the yield issues the Phantom Edition had.
Personally, the 24 and 32 pipe versions are indications of what may be down the road as they continue to master the smaller processes (versus 110nm). What you will purchase will the the 16 pipeline version at either the XL clock speeds or the XT clock speeds.
Shareholder information shows that the XL will most likely be released first with eventual release of XT as yields improve. Again another Phantom edition.
So beyond the informative portion of the 24 and 32 pipeline results, you'll not be purchasing one of these. Most likely you'll get a different core revision for the 32 pipeline as a "refresh" in the first half of '06. At this time, you'll also have the new "refresh" from nVIDIA that will be engineered to compete at the same level.
So, looks like nV will continue to hold the crown through '05 at least.

here is the link to VR-zone's "friends over at Hkpec".its a forum thread ,I didnt see anything mentioned in the translated version about pipelines.

first inqs miraculous finding that theres no G70 Ultra, and now this.
VR-zone has a history of posting wrong news.(G70 Ultra,Quadro picture)
Its probably fake story .. but anyway it dosent matter how many number of pipes are there . what matters is what can you supply the market with & by large quantities ;)

Ati is a weak company. They had 2 good cards the 9700 pro and the 9800. The x800 series aren't bad but it would have been nice to get one at launch. I waited for the x800 pe forever and I'm glad they forced me back to nvidia for the 6 series. They should look to Nvidia on how to launch a product..Ati and their paper launches bahhh
All I can say 'bout this story is...that it's bull**** :D
Yea... we'll see. I think I have heard just about everything concerning the R520.

Still another thread about this...
Its a fake peeps.Load the picture in photoshop, zoom, and see how odd the supossed core looks like
Aniwhay, if you don't thrust me, Ratchet at R3D seems to think the same

This makes me laugh, the final statement saying 32pp 650/1400 R520 will beat 7800GTX. That's so obvious, if that didn't happen we would be facing the worst architecture ever.
I wonder what they'll do with 10 gpu's, send them to reviewers and say "hey our card smashes our competitors' " ?

I'm at the point where i don't think the 520 even exists anymore.

but did you hear the one about the r520 having programmable UDawg optimizers in the core?
newbs always post stories like this. that should be your first sign to ignore it. but then again this is the rumor mill so i guess anything goes...

Does Driverheaven fit in there somewhere ? ;)
These guys say it's going to come out as a 16x1 card with later ones being 24/32PP cards http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2527 Bring out the defective cards first then the good PP cards after.

I don't think NVNews does ATi cards anymore. I would say PCGamer would have to be in there, too.

ATI knew that R520 is not much faster than G70 if on the same clock to clock when they decided the final retail clock to 600/1400.
Tests done by HKEPC on R520 XT engineering sample clocked 650/1400 scored 8600 3D Mark 2005 on FX55, not great score for higher clock with internal 512 bit memory transfering, on my 7800 GTX at 500/1300 with Athlon 64 X2 4400+, I got 8588 3D Mark 2005, that as much as a higher clock R520 XT, if it clocked 500/1300, it will perform very much slower than 7800 GTX. A 32 pipelines R520 clocked at 520MHz performed much slower than 650MHz R520 XT with 24 pipelines, ATI decided to cancelled 32 pipelines version for R580.
