View Full Version : ragejg's ongoing kt266a (GA-7VTXE+) mod!!
Well, I started on the evolution of my beloved mainboard... I had a lot of contemplating to do regarding this, but after FINALLY checking out the stepping of the XP1600+ that pelly sold me (AROIA Y, YEAAAAHH!!!), I decided to follow his lead and unlock the monster brewing under it's unassuming core...
BUT...
What good would it do on a Gigabyte mainboard lacking a multiplier switch??
Not much. I could never push fsb past 142, and that never helped much... Stability wasn't satisfactory, and my benchmark score/heat increase ratio just wasn't cool.
"WHAT?? MY MOBO'S SIBLING FEATURES MULTI. ADJUSTMENTS?? DANG IT DANG IT DANG IT!!! WHAT AM I GONNA DO?"
Being a mod-minded person, I double checked all the connections on my board to make sure it was the same as the VTXH+...
...yep.
Hmmmmm.... what if I...

With a mind for functionality over aesthetics, I had obtained a 6 position dip switch, as I couldn't find any 5's... no big deal. I disabled the #6 on it... (a later iteration of this will feature the correct switch)...
Experience in thru-hole soldering and reworking comes in handy right about here, as I had to desolder the existing holes VERY CLEANLY without lifting any pads... This was done succesfully, and the switch was placed in it's new home...

Using SN37/PB63 solder and no-clean flux, I installed the switch after desoldering... It went in nice and clean.

After cleaning the connections with alcohol and trimming the leads down, I'm now ready to put this mobo and ABSOLUTE GEM (*thanks pelly, miss you over here*) of a cpu to the test...
More on this VERY SOON, when I recieve in my new 60GB HD and piect the system back together...
Wish me luck!:)http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/attachment.php?s=&attachmentid=699

awesome work ragejg, can't wait to see the results
I think he gave the results in this thread (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6059)
Nice job, stick at it, I hope your figure it out
Geez guys:D:D:D
Well. "that thread" speaks of difficulties in my first unlocking, and my possible beleif in a different capacitor layout(?) between the VTXE+ and VTXH+... I was not sure of the quality of my unlocking... so I dunno... I'm not giving up, and I really believe this may work, but until I score a cpu that has a guaranteed good unlocking (I have unsteady hands especially under a mantis magnifier...), I'm not gonna have any results yet... My PC2700's not even here yet, and I'm just now shopping for an unlocked cpu... I'm gonna offer someone a trade on a locked XP1800+ for an unlocked 1600...
...or something...
Kinda at a standstill... I really haven't seen that many postings anywhere about ppl getting great oc's out of their kt266a, let alone my gigabyte... now I know of a Tom's article re: the VTXH+ but that was with a 1.2mp, and if I remember correctly, not many results were posted...
Don't worry guys/gals, more on this soon...
:afro: :afro:
.. and now they shall recieve... an addition to this chapter... here's a pic of the fsb options I supposedly have... :)http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/attachment.php?s=&postid=80057
the chart continues to the right, with:
150: 75 37.5
170: 68 34
180: 72 36
190: 76 38
200: 66.6 33.3
210: 70 35
220: 73.3 36.6
233.3 66.6 33.3
DANG!
Waterblock on NorthBridge?
Hacked BIOS?
... but the chart applies to a switch that's not there anymore, replaced by a 1 position switch to set cpu fsb @ 100 or 133... maybe if I restored that switch??
233.3?? CRAZY!!! I'd officially poop my pants if this board could do anything NEAR that... but I'll tone it down a bit and just jump for joy if I ever lock on to 166...
btw there's more discussion on wishing for 166fsb here:

T-Bred B 1700 on the way... Are they pre-unlocked?

yes, I know... teeny chip on core... What can I say, got it for less, and worked (and OC'ed) fine!
I am also looking for the 166MHz FSB on my MSI KT2 Combo with the Cypress W312-02H as clk-gen, KT266A and VT8235.
It supports also the manual selction of the main FSB_Mem_PCI clk settings up to 200_200_33, but this can be overwritten via the ICē-link, e.g. via CPU-cool.
Maybe thats the problem on yours as well.
If you are still on this what CLK-Gen chip does your board use?
