View Full Version : Hardlock Restart w/ 7800GTX

I am having a heck of a time trying to get my new 7800GTX to run 8xS with or without Trans Multi or Super @ my native resolution 1680x1050. I can run all my games with 4x w/Trans Multi and Super @ 1680x1050, but as soon as I try to load a game with 8xS set it freezes then restarts. I can run games @ 8xS from 800x600 to 1600x900, it just freezes @ 1680x1050. I have tried Forceware 77.77, 78.01, and 78.03, and my nforce drivers are v6.66. I have tried with my system running stock and overclocked. I am really confused....Please lend a helping hand, before I go insane.

You said: Freeze, Hardlock, and Restart, which one is it?

If it is a reboot or shut-down then it could be power related. A card will definately use more power at higher resolutions, higher speeds and higher AA.

To test, you could underclock your card and try again.

I wonder if there is a max resolution that 8xS works with. Like with 16xAA you can only go to 1280x1024. Actually, nevermind, I don't think that's it since I use 8xS at 1600x1200.

What it does is if I try to run any game set to 1680x1050 it will act like it is loading the hour glass pops up and the system just sits there, I cannot crt+alt+del or anything, then after about 10 to 20 secs my system restarts. Now if I am in a game that is not set to 1680x1050 when I try to apply the new resolution, it starts to change resolution where you can see the desktop and once again it will sit there for 10-20 secs and just restart. I have plenty of power running to the card and motherboard.

I will try underclocking, but I have played games at 1680x1050 4x 16x for many hours and no lockups. But who knows it might just work.

Just tried downclocking to 400/1100 and it still did it  .

List a game that it happens in and tell me how you set that resolution for the game (since a lot of games don't provide that resolution). I added a custom resolution of 1680x1050 for my CRT and I'll give that a shot with a game to see what happens. It might help determine if there is some 8xS / 1680x1050 issue or maybe it'll point to it being specific to a LCD (DVI or whatever) or maybe it won't help at all. :)

Edit: Fixed the resolution number.

Not sure if this helps but I was able to play Far Cry and UT2004 at 1680x1050 with 8xS AA on. So, maybe it's a LCD/DVI thing.

No go on Far Cry, Half-Life 2, WoW, and BF 2. I am thinking it is a driver problem with the Forceware, directly related to widescreen lcd's. I will keep trying hopefully something pops up.

Just out of curiosity, what game or games are you actually trying to use 8xS with?

Well of those listed only Half-Life 2 and WoW, Far Cry and BF 2 wouldn't run smoothly. Plus I really want to push the hardware for everything it is worth. Sorta I paid for it I wanna run it wide open.

Better PSU.

Sounds like a PSU issue... btw could you try lowering the font or shrinking your sig alittle? It makes your posts alot longer then they are.

I find it hard to believe my psu can be the cause as I am only running one card and I have plenty of amps. Also it works perfect with all eye candy turned up, up until 8xS.

It could easily be the issue, especially since your an OCer... Your PSU could have tons of amps but it could be dropping during extreme load.

How much does 8AA/16AF w/Trans Multi and Super really help you @ 1680x1050? I mean come on, that AA/AF isn't really going to smooth that much over at that resolution. Now if you were running 1024x768 I can see wanting to turn the AA/AF up. Maybe even 1280x1024 but not any higher.

I am all for getting the best IQ and FPS rate out of all my games but seriously, I bet if you turned it off at your resolution, you would have to look pretty damn hard to find a "jaggie" or anything else for that matter.

Then again, maybe I'm just to old to notice
