View Full Version : CrossFire doesn't work with high resolutions
Heh, I beg to differ.
Why? No one would buy their Crossfire cards if they did. ATI isn't stupid, if they were, they wouldn't be the leader in add-in graphics boards.
Just look at their crap software history, somehow their software group's incompetence contaminated their hw department.
damn shame
Yeah, their pre catalyst drivers. ATI has had great software for a long time.
I would say that the SiL 1161 chips is probably why Crossfire was delayed. I expect ATI to release X1800XT Crossfire cards with the 1171 and forget about the X850XT. Dropped the ball last gen in regards to multi graphics card solutions, hopefully they will get it together this time.
Yes, I also think ATI's drivers are quite good now. They used to be crap though.

Because if they ARE using the older chipset, I can't imagine they'd be willing to delay this any further to change everything. Maybe a refresh or something would have it, but this would set them back a few more months. They have to get something on the shelves and fast.
If you remember, they forgoed (is that a word?) SM3.0 this last round (and the refresh) because it would've meant a whole new architecture.

Yeah, ATi's drivers are far better today than they used to be. Perhaps better than NV's, currently (besides the latest shimmery cats). NV needs to get a handle on that damn profiler, and their optimizations need some IQ work. Thus the sig. (Till tomorrow, that is! The final piece of my monster should be here.)

Why do you just make things up? SLI doesn't support more than one monitor.
No I didnt make up, of course SLI doesnt support more than one monitor. I could be really really very surprise if Australia do not have ANY 30 inch widescreen monitors like Apple 30 inch Cinema monitor that support images up to 2560x1600. If you still not believe that widescreen monitors and 7800 GTX support that resolution, then I have 2 links here (http://www.plasmadesign.co.uk/30inchabstract.htm) and here (http://www.channelregister.com/2005/06/23/nvidia_launches_7800_gtx/). :o
I guess Australia are lagging a few years behind in technology.
On analog monitors 60 Hz is a real pain for the eyes, at any resolution above 800x600! But for LCDs it's perfectly fine, even at very high resolutions.
It's not the refresh rate that sounds strange to me rather the 1600x1200 limit for a system aimed at enthusiasts. I think that at that resolution a pair of modern videocards working toigether are still processor limited, even crancking up AA.

The Inquirer (http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=26198) got more information about resolution limited with Crossfire, that seem explained Master card use SiI 1172 transmitter chip and the Slave card use SiI 1171 receiver chip, both chips are different.
If true its a severe limitation.I personally couldn't care less about crossfire or sli since I think both of them are a waste of money.
edit...nevermid 1800 beat me to it

I wouldn't go that far, they've improved at fixing their driver bugs rather, but it seems they have a standards compliance issue by the number of rendering glitches/problems that new games seem to have. It largely goes un-noticed due to their speedy cat-releases.
They are doing a damn fine job listening to the community about such issues, and that's why it's not on the fore of discussion, so they really can't be faulted by it. However, it still signals to me a bit of a problem in their core software teams whenever something new comes out hw wise from them.

How about some examples of games that have these glitches.

52Hz? Ugh...my eyes hurt just hearing the number

Battlefield 2 is one I'm having problems with. I think I posted screenshots in the cat 5.8 thread. Other than that, the gamma issue is the only other annoying problem but it can be worked around 2 or 3 different ways.
52Hz? Ugh...my eyes hurt just hearing the number ya really.... just thinking about it makes me want to gouge out my eyes....

My 22" monitor at work can do 1600x1200 at 85Hz and it's amazing. I went to 1920x1440 and the screen real estate was amazing, but the refresh maxed at 60Hz and I had a headache within 10 minutes. :( I can do 75, but that's about as low as I can go.

Take a look at the problems fixed in their cat release notes.
is this limitation afffecting r4xx cards only, or r5xx cards will be having the same problem??

How is fixing bugs a bad thing? nVidia drivers have bugs too. Remember the yellow water in Half Life 2? How about something more recent like the wmv gamma issue, that was in an official dirver release.
Well that sucks. My 22" Mitsubishi 2070SB, which I have had for almost two years and will probably have it a few more, can do 1600x1200@100Hz and 2048x1536@85Hz. If and when I get a new PC I am probably leaning towards Nvidia once again.
