View Full Version : Great news regarding R520 yields and release!
http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/050920/205369.html?.v=1
TSMC is in volume production of multiple 90 nanometer (nm) products for ATI, including the Radeon® X1800, Radeon® X1600 and Radeon® X1300 series chips, and has shipped large quantities of production wafers to ATI.
"The ATI products produced with TSMC's 90nm process show a tremendous clock speed improvement and power reduction versus earlier generation technologies," said Jason Chen, Vice President of Corporate Development for TSMC. "As a result, TSMC is currently processing thousands of 300mm wafers for ATI, with many more already delivered. At this aggressive pace, ATI has already become one of our major 90nm customers."
"TSMC has done an excellent job of delivering on yields and speeds," said Rick Bergman, Senior Vice President of ATI's PC Business Unit. "As ever, they've proven themselves an excellent manufacturing partner as we ramp up some of the most advanced technology consumers have ever seen."
TSMC's state-of-the-art 90nm technology frees ATI from the limitations of less-advanced processes and enables a whole new level of performance and functionality for PC graphics. For example, the new ATI products have clock speeds around 50 per cent higher than products manufactured on older processes.
ATI expects the latest cards to begin arriving on store shelves by the end of September.
This excellent news, some competition is finally about to arrive.
Are they trying to say 750MHz core? 500Mhz + 50%? Geez, hard to believe but it would be nice. I doubt it will be that hight though.
Also, LARGE quantities shipped and expected on shelves by the end of September. :) That's for the whole family of cards too. :afro2:
This is marketing. Don't believe everything they tell you ;) But anyways, great news and finally competition.
woah finally, read something +ive on with ati
If you notice they just said 90nm parts. They never commented on the individual yields. As far as we know the yields on the X1800XT are still horrible.

I don think so.

Shame on me if this has been posted already... But look at the size of that thing! :D
I might have to do some moving around in my case for this to fit. Assuming it's worth getting.

I don think so.
But does tsmc know that the chips on the wafers are fully working, or does ati figure that out?

Do you really expect someone to know the answer to this question? For all you know it could be either

Calm down skippy. You might dream about 750mhz but it ain't gonna happen.
Next Friday is the last day of the month. That means they have 8 business days to get them (the XTs) on the shelves. Again ain't gonna happen.
I know you are one of the most rabid of ATI fanboys so I hope you pull through this fast approaching letdown that is about to come your way.
Don't worry there will still be time to buy a nice new nVidia 7800gtx when the shock and awe of a subpar vaporware XT ATI card wears off in a few weeks.
Wow, i've never seen good news get someone so uptight. Why is it you have so much trouble accepting positive news about ATi?
I guess you missed the bit where I said that 750MHz is hard to believe and I doubt that it's going to happen?!?

LOL I am just having some fun.
I actually do hope ATI gets it right because I am building a new box next month and want the best out there.
I admit I do have a chip on my shoulder in respect to ATI's CEO Orton. The guy cost me a lot of money because he has a hard time telling the truth to his shareholders. Hopefully he will be fired soon. ATI deserves better.
To be honest I have trouble believing these cards will be on the shelves in September too, but early October certainly does look good for the whole family of cards.

I wonder how much more they added to the card to regulate voltages and stabilize it as well as control leakage.
Is that a final revision?
Yea that thing is huge.
It seems as if nVIdia and ATI have swapped recently. ATI having the bigger dual slot design with high clocks, and nV having the smaller, single slot design with a more effecient approach.
It doesn't really matter, all that matters is the final benchmarks and IQ, I hope for competition sake, that they deliever a killer card. I don't think I would ever buy one though, because the need for a new mobo to run crossfire, not to mention I would be stuck at 60hz.

Yeah, it's kind of funny how that happened.
Is that a final revision?
No, it don't look like it. there is a couple of other pics from that story that are missing. here is the link... http://www.hexus.net/content/beanz/beanz.php?dXJsX3Jldmlld19JRD0xNjI5 the last pic shows that it seems to be the second revision which isn't the latest.
The card may not change that much though. It seems that it's the same size as the 7800GTX. Obviously the cooler on the XT is dual slot similar to the 490Mhz clocked 7800GTX extreme's etc.
...not to mention I would be stuck at 60hz.
Well that may not be the case, especially with the R520's. They do have two dual link DVIs.
Any word on AGP versions? That's the news I'm looking for.

Ditto. If there is no AGP version I won't be buying one quite as quickly as I had planned and will wait until I get set to transition to PCI-Express. I had hoped to hold off from that a bit longer and this card was going to buy me another 6-12 months.

ATI, a world leader in real time interactive advanced graphics, reports that it's new cutting edge manufacturing processes are in production at TSMC.
In preparation for it's new product launch, ATI further establishes itself as a graphics leader in the global market. "The new 90nm process will enable our products to reach a fantastic, quite frankly breathtaking new level in performance and quality" states some high level bigwig with a really long job title whose name we'll forget in the next 5 minutes.
In a major step forward for microchip manufacturing, TSMC is manufacturing the product on what's called "Silicon wafers". This enables millions of transistors to be laid on a small space, allowing for state-of-the art production techniques that will be unique to ATI.
ATI plans to ship the new product in retail and OEM forms, in the global marketplace.

Ha, thats the least they can do ;)

Not a big deal, my old G5 tower with the 6800 in it did that.
I just can't pony up the extra 3k for another 30". The one will just have to do me.
So yeh, the cards are comparable to 7800 series... atleast size-wise :D.
