My 9800pro died, so I replaced my mobo and gfx card, getting a 7800GT as a replacement (ohhhh nice and fast shiny goodness.)
Its great, except for a handful of games that can't seem to choose 1280x1024 at 32bit. Its been baffling me because other games can. After some investigative work I've tracked it down to DirectX, and specifically DirectDraw. DirectDraw, according to SiSoft Sandra, doesn't think my gfx card can cope with 1280x1024 at 32bit, which is a load of baloney.
From what RivaTuner comes up with, I know the monitor is reporting its capabilities correctly, and I've tried re-installing the Nvidia drivers, dropping back from 78.08 to 78.01.
I'm running Windows XP Pro, SP2 by the way, a clean slipstreamed install done a couple of weeks ago.
DxDiag checks out all okay.

Thats the largest option for 32bit. Games include DeusEx, Need For Speed: Porsche 2000, and Prince of Persia: Warrior Within (which comes with the gfx card)

Clean install of windows since then :D

the 9800pro was AGP, the 7800gt is PCI Express, which meant a whole new mobo. The old installation of Windows really didn't want to boot up on it :D

Some games don;t support 1280x1024, like FEAR, Also, maybe delete the ini file for the games that are not working.

Surely its just DirectDraw that is the issue? I just can't see how to force DirectDraw to redetect.

I've tried deleting all the game config files *shrug*

Doom3 and HL2 will quite happily run at 1280x1024 @ 32bit. I know for certain that Deus Ex and NFS:p2000 will run at 1280x1024 @ 32bit, as I've run them merrily at that setting on my old 9800 pro.

I fixed this by adding 1280x960 at 32bit as a custom resolution using the nvidia control panel. This for some reason allowed me to advance to 1280x1024 in most D3D games such as NFS:U and PoP

I fixed this by adding 1280x960 at 32bit as a custom resolution using the nvidia control panel. This for some reason allowed me to advance to 1280x1024 in most D3D games such as NFS:U and PoP

Doesn't seem to make a difference for me.

I'll try some newer non-whql drivers and see if its a quirk.

Uhh... interesting.

New drivers, same old issue.

Even tried a bios update (which irritatingly changed this GT into a GTX, but without the extra pipelines, then complained about the lack of power and ran it in slow performance mode), then downgrade. Nowt fixed it.

Just told Windows that it wasn't a plug'n'play monitor, and that it was a Digital Flat Panel (1280x1024)... and it resolved it.
RivaTuner, when it probes the monitor as plug'n'play quite happily reads its capabilities.. so I'm really baffled now.

Still, problem kindof solved.

Yes, leaving your display device listed as "Plug and Play" is like saying you have a "really fast car" or "a really powerful computer" or "a really big house"...

It's not listing the important bits.

Windows needs to know what display you have so it can protect you from accidently setting resolutions and refresh rates that would damage your display.

Until you load the monitor driver file, Windows protects you from yourself.

A monitor driver file (monitor.inf) is essential to the correct operation of your computer.

Thats not really true you know. Plug'n'Play allows the monitor to report back its specifications to the system itself, rather than relying on a driver. Using Plug'n'Play drivers is more like saying to a mechanic "Here's the car, you've got two eyes, you read the manual and understand what it can do". The mechanic will have a better idea than me anyway about timings and the like :D
If you were talking about the "Default Monitor" option that you get with Windows, I'd agree with you in part, though even that does an element of timing checking.
There is no specific monitor driver that I can dig up with the AL718 unfortunately. :(

I got this Nokia 19" CRT here that wont allow as high refreshrates as "plug and play monitor" as it does with the proper driver installed..
So I would recommend installing the proper driver.
I think PnP allowed max 85hz @ 1024, while the nokia 960c driver allowed 120hz @ 1024.. something like that anyway.

Do you have Windows XP ? (It lists that as the operating system supported..)

Took me 2 minutes to find this file on the Pan America Acer website.

And yes, it does matter if you have it set as "Plug and Play" versus the actual brand and model.
