how to share outlook e-mail database?

Can't you just change the location of the database to a shared folder? I did that for my parents system so they could have separate accounts but see the same e-mail, etc. It was all under the same OS but it seems like you should be able to do the same as long as the shared directory (partition where it resides) is readable by both OSes. Of course, being in an "open" directory means anyone can access the DB.
