I have a: AMD 3400+ 64bit
1024MB Kingmax DDRram
Geforce 6800 Ultra
Asus K8N-E Deulux Motherboard

My monitor is only 15" so I can only play my games in 1024X768, which I have no problem with, but I like gaming with Max Detail for every setting..With this hardware and my resolution/detail preference, will games coming out this/early next year such as Quake 4, FEAR, Indigo Prophecy etc be able to run very well? (I'm playing Far Cry, Vampire: Bloodlines, Brothers In Arms, GTA: SA now on those aforementioned settings and they all run flawlessly) Will playing in medium resolution ensure very good gaming performance for the near future? How long could I use this rig before having to get a new one, its not worth upgrading one part because if I wanted a 7800 3D card, I'd need a new motherboard etc etc.

Your rig is more than enough for resolution not exceeding 1280 by 1024 with 4X AA and 16X AF :) If I were you I would wait for the next gen ;)

I actually don't play with AA or AF either...

I'm planning on PS3...I don't think 360 interests me :P What other next-gen stuff are you referring to though?

The next graphics cards released by nvidia after the 7800 series.

Cmon, your PC is 100 times better than 90% of the gamers out their and your asking if its still okay? an AMD64/6800 system is FAR FAR FAR from being outdated, unless of course you play 3dmark05

Yes I agree the question in itself seems kind of silly. A 6800U is going to be more than adequate unless you run in ultra high resolutions w/full AA turned up.

How about fear with SoftShadows? Will a 6800 Ultra run that smoothly?

My 6800GT @ Ultra was able to, just had to turn off AA. :o

The question was about being a decent system, which his computer will be for another year at least, not about being top-top end.

Yeah, it will. I tried the demo on a P4 3.06 /w 2GB RDRAM. Ran flawlessly @1024x768 with everything max, SoftShadows and 2xAA.

LOL

Noone has a top end computer for more than 6 months at a time without pouring money into a new CPU or graphics card. One or the other always gets usurped at the top by another model within that period of time.

Im going to have to call BS on that one... different people have different descriptions of what flawless is ;)

I played the demo with everything max and no AA at 1024x768 and 8xAF and it ran like ass in a few places. I turned a few things off\down and it still looked great but it was much smoother (25-30fps in the really slow spots id say) and 100% playable.

To me flawless would be framerates over 60 all the time... ;)

I just get frightened when I see those with FXxx systems with SLI'd 7800GTX's and PCI-E motherboards :P

don't sweat it, in actuality, they make up a small percentage of the total amount of game rigs out there.

Well, I played through the entire demo using that system. And it was very smooth from beginning to end.

EDIT
The setting was actually 4xAA/2xAF (set in game) with everything at max and SoftShadows on. FPS ranging from from upper 20s to 90s, average in 50s.

First of Fear has a crapy 3D engine. Any one who played HL2 should know that. (The game runs like shiznit, for graphics that really aren't that great)

Besided, Just a year ago the 6800 GT and Ultra was the top end card from nvidia. People who have SLI 7800GTX and Athlon FX 57's and 2GB of DDR 600 Ram will be screwed in a year our so. Why? Because Athlon FX 60 and above, and Geforce 8 series. Their system will no longer be the Top Dog. Plus Windows Vista is going to introduce true 64-bit environment, not like the half assed mostly 32-bit/with kinda 64-bit Windows XP x64 edition. So all Athlons even the lowly Athlon 64's will obtain a major speed boost.

Thousands of dollars, just to find out that your neighbor with the lowly Athlon 64 and Geforce 8 series card can play every thing they can for a fraction of the cost.

Huh? This game looked 100x better than HL2 and looks damned amazing. You sure you played the same game?
