As you guys can see from the rig in my sig (ya dig :cool2: )... what was once a feisty contender now seems limp when asked to run F.E.A.R or BF2. I'm in the market for a big 3 upgrade (motherboard, processor and vid card). Yet I'm on a much tighter budget than my previous generation leaping upgrades.

My current thinking is something along the lines of an Nforce 4 based motherboard (perhaps epox). ~4000+ San Deago based AMD64 chip. With maybe a 6800GT from leadtek. Even then I'm looking at about 500 which is a whopping amount of moneys. I'm sticking with AMD since they've done me well and my preference would be a return to nVidia since I miss the wholesome feeling owning one of their cards gave me. Any ideas if/when prices are likley to head in the downward direction, and which chips in the AMD64 line are cheap but good overclockers?

I should know this stuff, but my geek life has come full circle and I'm asking on nvnews instead of advising 5 years after my first visit. Madness!

Dual Core CPU that is the X2 3800? u can overclock that to past 2.4 ghz apparently!
Then a 7800 GT
nforce4 SLi mobo

well under 500 quid mate I think

You sure?

Roughly 250 for the 7800GT
270 for the 3800+ X2
Throw 80 quid for the mobo and I'm 100 out. I might be swayed to go over budget but I'll await other suggestions first. Thanks though mr MUYA you mad raving looney.

Stop buying poncu high street jeans and shirts and actually wear some of them for more than one week and you might have enough you vainty obessed plonker ;)

I didn't that teh prices were that high especially so for the X2...well maybe you don't want to go dual core and go for single core 90nm a64 cpu and overclock the crap out of it?

Still the prices are in the same sort of league. Unless there is some sort of magic deal I'm missing I'm quite tempted to just buy a nice TV and wait for the X360 to come down in price or even for the PS3... Clothes are essential btw, you can never have enough.

I'd suggest a 3700+(SD core), kick it up a few mhz too 4000+ speeds and your golden, then put the savings into a 7800GT, you'll get much more milage out of it than with a 6800GT......if you're upgrading and on a tight budget, might as well go with what gives the most longevity ;)

Part of me is desperate to upgrade but the other part knows that money could be better spend elsewhere. I just dislike the current setup I have. How much could I get for the parts I have 100? At best :/

Maybe there is a solution, would it be a total waste of time throwing a 7800GT into my existing machine?

Edit: wait is there an AGP version?

You could always have a quick look on ebay to see how much your parts are selling for. I am selling my leadtek 7800 gt there a the moment.

Nope, none of the 7800s are getting AGP versions apparently.

If you want my input, I'd suggest getting a new nForce4 mobo and a 7800 GT. Save the processor upgrade for later, you'll be OK for the time being.

How can I get a new nforce (socket 939) and use my socket 754 on it? ;)

I think you should be fine with a 3500+ and 7800GT.
i dont see anything beyond or below asus a8n-sli. :p

EDIT: Actually no, you already have a 3000+
So you can go for 3500+ or 3700+ (s754), keep your current mobo, and get 6800Gt/Ultra.
should last you for a year. im in the same road, wont upgrade anything before vista. pro'lly an agp g7x or r5xx, depends, if any agp's are out.
