I am surprised to find HKEPC (http://www.hkepc.com/bbs/viewthread.php?tid=479008) has ATI slides mentioned they have working R580 chip and it is ready and waiting to launch later this year!

It look like R580 has been rushed out of development early so ATI didnt want it launch next year to be late long after Nvidia will launch the secret weapon G71 a 32 pipeline Geforce 7800 Ultra in the next few months, ATI want R580 to be out early minus probably some missing features that ATI dont have the time to fix or put new features in it. :)
It very good HKEPC exposed it so they dont want ATI to spoilt your next Radeon X1800 XT 512MB purchase.

If true this is interesting. That would represent a HUGE effort on ATI's part to get r580 out. What will happen likely is that r520 will become a more mainstream high end part, while r580 will be their killer enthusiast part for xmas/winter release.
Given that though, is the intent for the r520 to compete with the 7800GT while r580 compete w/GTX? I can't wait to see nVidia's card play out this time.
Either way I'll be quite pleased to see what happens. I'm hoping ATI delivers a good product. It's just a shame on some of their decisions thus far, looks like the timing was off.
And here are the pricing on the upcoming cards...
X1xxx xx Memory Price
X1800 XT 512MiB $549
X1800 XT 256MiB $499
X1800 XL 256MiB $449
X1600 XT 256MiB $249
X1600 XT 128MiB $199
X1600 Pro 256MiB $199
X1600 Pro 128MiB $149
X1300 Pro 256MiB $149
X1300 256MiB $129
X1300 128MiB $99
X1300 Hyper Memory 128MiB $79
I wonder if there will be a 512MB XL thrown into the mix.
R580 is on time its the R520 that was delayed. ;)
I would personally go for an X1800XT or 7800GTX since DX10 cards are coming in almost a years time. :)
Pricing looks good and I guess we have Nvidia to thank for.Competition is nice! :D
Yea WGF2.0 cards will start shipping at the beginning of next year.

I don't think R580 will appear anytime soon.
If R580 is a DirectX 10 part, then It's all depend on when Microsoft Windows Vista will be released on next year.

Prices look good especially for a new 512M enthusiast card.
So i speculate its going to be the X1900XT with more shader pipelines .. perhaps 20 or 24.
You mean end of next year. :p
I heard March.
I heard March.
Isn't that a bit too early for DX10 hardware?

Dont think so, they if Vista will be shipping by Jun, these cards should be available by april, may..
Yea Vista is coming early Summer, so March sounds about right to me.

20/24 and 32 pipeline cards. the R580 is from a diffrent devision of ATi that works independedntly to the department working on the R530 cards.

I thought Vista was coming late 2006 (http://software.silicon.com/os/0,39024651,39151834,00.htm)
Dam can't wait for Vista. It will mark a new era in gaming.
Every one should start saving up now.

Every one should start saving up now. dont you mean a new level of windows code bloat the like we have never seen....
Guys guys its almost october and the r520 is no where in sight, do you really think you'll see the r580 before xmas? If you do, then pass the blunt to the :afro: on the left.

Yo man, don't dismiss a surprise attack on ATI's side. Remember when the dustbuster, errr 5800U came out. Within weeks of the review, the 5900U magically appeared with a 256bit bus. The 9800Pro still spanked its arse, though. What if the early preview benchmarks from Hardware analysis were spot on, don't you think ATI could plan such a maneuver. Think about it, release the 1800xt as their mid-tier high end part and put out some BS marketing like "It is coming...hold your arse" or some nonsense. It would not surprise me if they indeed released the true high end card around Christmas to recoup some losses. Also, it could give them some time to fix the absolute disaster that is Crossfire.

Thats because the 5800 was a failure, nvidia scrambled and released the refresh quickly. If ati is already hinting that the r580 in coming soon then the r520 isnt all that its cracked up to be. And frankly no one will buy it since the r580 is right around the corner.

Psh...all I know is I want to see some AGP parts. I'm not interested in upgrading my cpu/mobo this year.
This entire R520 debacle is strangely similar to the dreaded 5800 series of events. ATI was showing an R520 back in DECEMBER 2004!!! It is now almost October 2005 and nothing has been released! Sounds just like the 5800 if my memory serves me right. Now ATI will deliver a 90nm 16 pipe 700+MHz part to compete with Nvidias 110nm 24 pipe 430 MHz card that was released at least 5 months ago. That also sounds very similar to the 5800 vs. R300 affair (high clock vs. high efficiency). I predict just like the 5800 that the R520 will have a very short life. Hopefully time will prove me wrong (but I don't think so). ;)
Well just because it is in house and working does it mean it is done? Didn't they have the R520 in house and working at the start of 2005?
