Sounds best =)
But can take up some nice room on the HD..Also dont like the way it eats up my system..
Gaming plus winamp OGG dont mix..Thats why I use MP3's..

Yeah, but quality 8 Oggs take up less space and sound WAY better than 320kbps MP3s.
Anyone tried converting Ogg to WAV to burn to Audio CD? I did a while back and notice some distortion (kind of reverb like) in the recording. Actually didn't notice it until I got some better speakers. The Oggs in question came from a game, so I can't compare with original CD audio. Note that I don't believe their is any problem with Ogg, perhaps with using compressed formats in general, or the converter program I used (I forget the name atm as I am not at home).

i think that's a general compression problem.
but what quality were the oggs encoded in? that could factor in too.
Somewhat on the topic of OGG, does anyone know if there are any groovy portable OGG players/jukeboxes (like the iPod or Nomad Jukebox series)? My MP3/CD player has gone the way of all flesh, so it's time for a replacement. I'd like something that can handle OGG files, though. I've been quite pleased with them for general listening pleasure.
And I've had the distortion problem going from low-bitrate MP3s to WAV files on CD as well. The joys of lossy compression!
Cheers,
JND

I don't think there are any players YET that support ogg...

i thought there were...just not many.

I was gonna use ogg, but then wmp9 came out in beta.
So I don't. wma9 is easier.

Wait... wait....
Oh yeah, this is the point where I kick you square in the nuts. :p
Seriously though, I'd be really surprised if wmp9 actually sounded better than ogg.

I didn't say it sounded better...
I never even got to the point where I was using ogg. (As I said I wanted to though.)
It's just easier to use.
By the way, it sounds awesome. I can't say better or worse, but it is either regular or VBR, and with XP (I dunno on 2000 with the final release) it has lossless too.
Oh, and ow.

i am almost assured that .wma cannot even match .mp3

Uhm, I think it surpasses it. I have 1 MP3 and 1 WMV of the same song. Both high quality, WMV sounds a notch better.

I don't know what the ogg encoding quality was, the game is Operation Flashpoint: Resistance and the sound track is awesome, from a group called 7th I think.
On WMA, I havn't used it much at all, but don't pre-knock WMA and WMV just because they are from MickeySoft, they are not bad standards for quality and compression. Search the net for professional quality studies, or get a group of 100 friends blind folded to tell you which one sounds best.

Well i figure since microsoft is creeping in the drm that wmv is all but shot as a decent method. Mp3 already requires fees and liscences now as well. Ogg is open sourced and freely available.
That and when sharing on the donkey or kazaa how many people actually think to download ogg files? Saves me a whole buncha bandwidth

indeed. i base my comments on such audio tests.
i'm pretty sure i saw several evaluations on WMA9 and it still couldn't compare with MP3.
i know for a fact that WMA8 doesn't, based on listening tests, etc.
the thing about WMA is that it was originally made for lowbit rates. so for <128kbps WMA sounded better than MP3. but at higher bitrates(including 128 in most tests) MP3 won out.
Mp3 already requires fees and liscences now as well.
only the Franhoufer or however you spell it. use LAME. it's open source.

you're going to have to be more specific. did you encode the songs yourself? what bitrate songs are you comparing? many songs found on filesharing programs are poorly encoded. what mp3 encoder was used? LAME VBR is by far the best for quality AND size.

I don't know, I always found wma beats mp3 at the same bitrates. especially at/after v8
However, I don't USE those bitrates. I use the VBR or the lossless codecs on v9. And I can barely tell the difference between them and the CDs

I never heard something bad in a 192Kbps mp3...
If you hear a mp3, can you distinguish if it's 192Kbps, 320kbps, Ogg or CD??

Done it myself of a cd. Both have same bitrate/quality level of settings.
128kbps 16bit stereo.
Same file was ripped of the cd twice. One in MP3 the other WMA.
Don't know know what MP3 encoder was used. It was a good one though.
It was the song Eyes on Me form the FF8 cd3. It was a while ago.

Does kiler's rep for low res also lead us to the low bitrate theory as well????

I rarely download music now, when I do its always some rather obscure group. The copys I get are 160 I believe and always sound pretty good:)
Personally I rip all my music at 320:cool:

Me too, as I don't know WTF I am talking about. :)
Well normally I encode MP3's with some freeware program I can find. :)
My MP3's are usually high quality.
Yes, my low res theory works also for sound etc... ;)

Using CDex with a SBLive Plat 5.1, Sennheiser HD570s, and Winamp 3, I find that the CDs I rip myself always sound better as quality 8 Oggs than in 320kbps MP3s.
And I don't share these, so quality is all that matters.

hehe, or you could be like me and share over T3, then filesize doesn't matter either :D
