This was entered in the quick reply input area without first clicking on the quick reply icon.

I clicked on the quick reply icon in the second post before I added this text. Does it make any difference or not? If not, then who am I replying to?

I clicked on the quicky reply icon in the first post before I added this text. This is what vBulletin says about quick reply:
If you enable Quick Reply, a box will appear on the showthread.php page allowing users to reply to the current thread without needing to load the full newreply.php page.

When Quick Reply is enabled, you may specify whether or not users must click the Quick Reply icon in order to start typing in the Quick Reply editor.

If you choose not to require a click, the system will not know to which post a user is replying, making both the threaded and hybrid display modes non-sensical.

We strongly recommend that you set the option to require a click if you use Quick Reply and have Threaded Mode available on your forums.

I clicked on the quicky reply icon in the first post before I added this text. But I also checked the Quote message in reply box option. With this option, it should be clear that this post is a reply to the first post.

Ok Mike, I understand what it does.

When you click the little quick reply next to someones post, it changes the title name to whatever the title is that you quick replied to.

Watch, the title of my post is "nvnews"

If I just do a quick reply by typing in the bottom box, I get "Re: Testing quick reply feature" as the title.

Hmm...it wasn't changing the title of your post earlier when you replied, but then again, the threads I was posting in all had post titles with the same text. That would probably explain it. :p

If I click reply next to the post that was titled "nvnews" I get a "Re: nvnews" title.

I dunno if its that useful, because I never change the title of my post :)

Thanks for pointing that out. BTW, I dd not use quick reply to make this post

Which reminds me. I need to increase the smiley's window size when the (show) more option is selected.

P.S. The inline editing feature is very cool...
