Will a 478 p4 with a 7800 gt have any significant gains over a 6800 Ultra or does the cpu bottleneck the performance?

You will be CPU limited.
BTW, you wont be able to use the 7800 with that rig, since 7800 is PCI-Express only. and i think you have agp.

Maybe there will be an agp 7800GT(X). :)

Not likely, in the next 2 months that is.
Hope fully there should be !

I'm afraid that after ATi decided to scrap its planned X1800AGP, we're left with 6800s / X800s only.

Of the next gen parts, only low end models have been announced though they will be probably on par (as performance) with today 6600GT / X700.

Thus anybody planning to upgrade its AGP based PC should probably hurry to purchase a 6800 (or ATi equivalent) possibly with 256MB of RAM.

I understand what your saying about AGP, however, I found that albatron makes one board that is a 478 with PCI-express so I was considered upgrading. Would it be worth it at all then?

I think it would be somewhat wasted on your CPU. It would seem better to leave it & save the cash till you can comfortably afford a 7800 + X2 combo.

Well you can get a 478 pin motherboard with PCI Express 16x but like everyone said it will be really CPU limited and not worth the upgrade.
