View Full Version : Honestly guys
Technically nvidia is behind a generation, sure the 7800 is fast but its an nv40 refresh with a tweaked core and more pipes(it is an you know it!), no new features were added to it except traa. Whether the x1800 is faster or slower then the gtx, its feature set will win the crowd, just like the nv40 did against the x800.
what alternate reality do you live in? :p
I call it drunken stupor.
It is not for everyone, but it feels like home.

You mean they're ahead a generation right? They supported the newer features first starting with the nv40 and ATI is finally catching up and apparently adding a few new things.
I think shabby was just trying to say that the G70 is just a refresh that has to compete with a real nextgen card from ATi. I think everyone knows that anyway.

my prediction --
1. ati will release the card and demo it to reporters/press using the loast coast demo from valve.
2. the single card and their crossfire configs will beat the 7800gtx's in carefully constructed tests probabably by a large margin.
3. ati will use their tests to promote their own card (like every other manufacturer does)
4. Weeks later 3rd party sites and gamers will conclude on their own that the 7800 series is a little bit better than ati's line.
5. atiers will stick to ati and nvidia fans will stick to nvidia because the difference is once again personal preference.
case closed.

The gtx is ahead in features yes, ati screwed up sm3/hdr with the x800. But before the nv30 competed with the r300, then the nv40 competed with the r420. Now nvidia has the nv47(nv40 refresh) competing with ati's new r520.
Even if nvidia releases some magical 32pipe nv47 it'll be behind feature wise to the r520. It'll be just like the r420 vs nv40 matchup, speed vs feature set, except it looks like ati will hold the feature set now.

Yeah, that's about how I am looking at it.
This is good though because it will prod NVIDIA that much harder and hopefully make them go the extra mile with G80/G90/whatever else they are working on.
I'm ready for NVIDIA to hint at something new around the corner. I think 2005 is too early for NVIDIA's true "next gen" core, but I could be wrong.
I actually want R520 to beat G70. It won't make me sorry I bought a GTX a couple months ago. I'm all for the industry progressing. Having ATI beat NVIDIA is only going to make NVIDIA work harder and might make the industry move faster than it would have.
The way I look at is Nvidia has already won this generation because you can't really compare anymore now it's been so long w/the ATI delay's and everything. Not that winning means anything, I just don't really consider it a battle at this point. It's will be more interesting just to see what ATI has come up with and if it adds anything to our current best.

I'm happy with what I got (eVga 7800gtx with the free mobo $549 shipped)
I do think the x1800xt will be faster. If you can get one within the first month and it doesn't cost over $600 I think it will force nvidia to release something better but who knows.

NM. :p
I couldn't care less *if* the R5** series beat G70 in either the performance or IQ sector. With DX10-class hardware bound to be out next spring/summer (with the onset of Windows Vista) anyway, I'm perfectly happy with my GTX's for the next 9-10 months or so...

Will be interesting see how many GTX Nvidia has sold since it has been annunced and how many X1800XT will ATI sell in the next same number of months.

G70 is indeed just a refresh of NV40.
but R520 is not a totally new architecture from R420, although it is more improved over R420 than G70 is over NV40.
ATI and Nvidia are now roughly equal in features and capability. as for performance, Nvidia holds the crown in Doom 3 engine while ATI has holds the crown in HL2 and 3D Mark.
the R580 is not ATI's next-gen, it is merely a refresh of the R520. ATI's next-gen is the R600 which will have a unified shader architecture and DX10 / Shader 4.0 capability.
Nvidia's next gen is the NV50 which may or may not be the G80. Is the G80 a true next-gen GPU, or is it just a refresh of G70 which would make it yet another NV4X architecture. we don't know yet. and anyone who says with certainty that G80 = NV50 and is the next gen Nvidia would look silly without knowing. many said that G70 was the next gen Nvidia GPU and was NV50 but were wrong. Nvidia likes to play games with everything.
I don't expect to see true next gen GPUs that are DX10 / WGF2.0 / Shader 4.0 capable until fall 2006. that's when we will see R600 and NV5X.
what G80 is, is unknown until Nvidia comes clean. the G80 might just be a souped up G70 designed to compete with ATI's R580. or it could be that G80 is a true next-gen GPU designed to go against ATI's R600. too little information right now.
same with me, (edited.by.jAkUp) i really couldn't care less. i'm happy with what i have.

Let's just say that a 7800GTX gets 40FPS in FEAR. So if the X1800 XT get 60...does it REALLY matter? Can you really see those extra 20 frames? I know what people are going to say to argue this, but that's not the point. The point is that either card rocks, one is just faster and the extra speed doesn't really do much good now anyway.
I hate this argument
The card getting 60FPS doesn't have a constant 60 the entire game. Depending on the complexity of the scene or simplicity, it goes above and below. It might dip down to 40 when there is hardcore action on screen

Now assuming (off your logic) that 40 is the point where everything above looks the same, then the card that gets 60FPS average will never ever notice a difference
Now assuming (off your logic) tha 40 is the point where everything below has noticeable lag, then the card that gets 40FPS average will look like ass at times
When the extra speed prevents something from looking like crap, it actually does do a little bit of good now and then. Conidering we sink money into graphics cards so that we DON'T have to have crap graphics in the first place...

No, I know, and I agree...the 40/60 argument was extreme, just to make a point which probably wasn't very good. I knew, at the most, the difference would be like 10%...not 33%.
But whatever. The cards have been "released" and everything is still in order. The world has no ended. Black is not white, up is not down, AMD is still faster than Intel...it's all good. :D

Ya, I sent a report to the admin. Always fun to have a porn link in your very first post...

well x1800 will probably leak power like a sieve. i wouldnt worry, the 7800GTX not only delivers insane rendering, but it delivers better performance per watt.
