Hi,

I recently bought a Gainward 6800GT 256MB and so far havent been all that impressed with it, but im not sure if thats my fault or not?

I tested it out on 3Dmark05 and these were the results:

Im not sure if my results were any good? When i was watching the animations they were averaging on frames of 14-25 whcih i dont think is very good considering the price i paid for this card.

You can see some of my pc specs up there but here are the rest:

CPU - Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz
OS - Windows XP
RAM - 1.5 GB
GPU - nVidia GeForce 6800 GT 256MB

Are these results good or bad?

Thanks

You are somewhat CPU limited. Did you get the "Golden Sample" one? If so it should be much higher as its OC'ed stock to Ultra. If your running at GT speeds... that score is probably about right.

Those are very good results, right in line with what I got when I had my 6800 GT.

Im not sure wether mine is the golden sample version?

I just did another test, but before i did i used expertool and pushed the core clock settings to 424mhz from 350mhz and the memory clock setting to 1199 mhz from 1000.

My new 3d score was 5679 and cpu score was 4078, but still the animation seemed jumpy and all this was without FSAA and other features?

I know this software is meant to push the card to its limits but i have to admit i was expecting more?

Is there a way to improve my CPU score? Ive been having some problems with it these past few days. For some reason, one day it just shot up to 100% cpu usage even if nothing was running? It was a few hours after i had installed the new card so im wondering if its got something to do with that? any suggestions? Its ok at the moment because i opened 'msconfig' and stopped all of the programs coming up, but i cant keep it like that forever.

I'll do another test with all the features and let you know what the score is.

Also, do you think its safe to keep running my card at the setting i changed it to?

cheers

yea, the stock GT speeds (350/1000) are right on par with mine as well. i hit 5054 but the difference is mainly because of the CPU.

if you want to get your CPU running better, there are a few options. run 'msconfig' from the "run" bar and disable the startup programs you dont need. disable things that you dont use in bios (ie, i disabled my second gigabit lan, my second raid controller, and my onboard audio). you could try a fresh install of windows as well.

to get it running best, OC that bad boy. get a good heatsink/fan and OC til you find a stable temp/speed/voltage. intel's are notorious for OC'ing. also, if you enable HyperThreading (dont know if you have it or not, but the 3dmark thing says its disabled) you could get some extra performance.

Now im totally new to this Graphics card testing thing, in fact ive never bought a high end card before. Ive just upgraded from the x300 SE and with that i could happily play games like Doom3 and HL2, obviously not to the high standard but a playable one. So i think my expectations of this card were very high, because if a x300 SE can play Doom3 at an ok standard then the 6800GT must be able to blow that away! Admitably i havent actually played Doom3 with this card yet and i tried playing HL2 but that muthafukin STEAM is playing up! So the games ive tested it on have been Farcry and Boiling Point. I was very impressed with Farcry but Boiling point seems to want extra from me? The FPS arent brilliant, around 22?

Im hoping to be able to play games like Bet on Soldier and things a like in the future to a high standard. Do you think it'll be ok?

Cheers again guys

yes, bet on soldier works fine for me, i play all my games at 1280x1024 without a hitch. the 6800gt isnt the top of the line, but it has more than enough power for modern games.

OC it to Ultra speeds (400 core / 1100 memory) and it will work great in all games. I have yet to see a game that stops my card in its tracks. No I have not tried FEAR yet.... but I played Doom 3 on Ultra High and play BF2 on the highest settings both games on 1280x1024 and everything is running smooth. AOE III demo also worked great for me (also with everything on full). Maybe try OC'ing your CPU a little bit too might help. I think the 6800GT OC'ed is still a very fine card. :)

my card doesnt OC worth a damn, literally. i can hit 400 core, but i cant get past 1.01GHz memory.

Your 3D5Mark is right on the money. I get roughly the same, with almost the same setup.
You got to try Doom 3.... i am going through it again at 1600x1200 Ultra Settings + 2xQ AA.... looks and plays great... 45+FPS ( i am CPU limited also ).

Wow, Doom 3 on 45fps! Do you think that openGL based games are more effective in 'unleashing' the best of your card? Because ive never really been that impressed with Direct3D games? And i think that Boiling Point is direct3D which is maybe the reason im not too WOW'd by it?

What tempreture would you say is a dangerous one? With my card using the most up to date settings i mentioned it reaches temps or around 65c. Do you think if it goes any higher it'll damage it?

Cheers again guys

when i had p4 2.8e HT + 6800GT, i used to score somewhat close to 4400 in 3dmark'05, with drivers 66.xx

then i shifted to 3200+ and 6800GT, my score went to 4500 approx, with same drivers.

then i changed drivers to 67.xx and scored 4600 or sumthin.
then changed to 69.xx and scored 4880 or sumthin.
then changed to 71.84 scored 4800 or sumthin,
then changed to drivers 72.xx and scored 4800 sumthin.
My current score with drivers 76.44 is 5177.

Botom Line: your score is good. update the new drivers it will/may get better.
Btw, check performance in games. 3dmark 05 is useless IMO.

As for the temps, your card goes to 65 on load, thats great. its fine. you need to get worried if it crosses 90-95*C barrier.

Mine 3DMark05 mark is 5972
Its not on stock clocks, now is it?

I didn't bother to do a vmod in BIOS,
so it's 430/1150

Don't use it either. Just for the test. At 1.3v I reach 5921 marks @420-1100 with A64 2400mhz.

But then again, when you start playing with voltage that's when you really are likely to fry your card, no?

Have a vf700cu on it. :)
The temps didn't really change though.

I dunno,
I have a pretty ventilated case - I'm running a stable 401/1101 OC -
I get around 5,600 in 3Dmark05 (with A64 +3000@stock).

I have an XFX card and it comes with two years warranty, that I hope to use if/when I need to, replacing the HSF or frying the card will void the warranty, so I'm not risking it...

What temps u get with high load in the card?

GRUNT,
With a A64 3500+ I even get a bit less.
Your score is great.
But I do not OC the card, nor CPU.
BTW my POV 6800GT is the best thing I ever bought.

Yeah, my video card is the only thing I have oc'd. My system bios is set on the High Performance setting, whatever that is. LOL I tried my card at 425/1150 and made it thru 3dmark2001se okay, got 18790, but started seeing a few little artifacts in 3dmark03 and stopped it early.

"High Performance "
This is OC on itself already AFAIK.
