Razer Copperhead High Precision Gaming Mouse Review (http://www.nvnews.net/reviews/razer_copperhead/index.shtml)

Razer USA's latest gaming mouse is now available. With Razer sticking with the serpentine naming theme, the Copperhead High Precision Gaming Mouse promises improvements over its Diamondback predecessor (http://www.nvnews.net/reviews/razer_diamondback/index.shtml). What are these improvements? Do they add considerable value to the Copperhead? Let's find out.

Looks good, however im a bit weary to upgrade because im wondering if ill have a nothign learning curve when playing my games again with a even faster mouse! Ill have to contemplate this!

Well I still love mine :D Only problem is that I upgraded to the 6.16a, and it completely broke my ability to track on my Icemat Rev2. I talked to Razer, and 1 day later they gave me a 6.16b firmware version that fixed my problem completely!

There is a bit of an learning curve/adjustment period. I'd say that after about 12 hours or so of gameplay I began to feel as comfortable (or moreso) than I did initially with my MX700 back when I moved to the Diamondback. Going from the Diamondback to the Copperhead was not much of an adjustment at all, especailly since you have so much control over the sensitivity settings.

Jakup, I thought you had a 518. In fact, it was in the pic of your rig.

Anyway, I have only tried the diamondback, which I'd bought from newegg. Had to return it the next day.
It's the most uncomfortable mouse to hold that I've ever used, and I've used a lot of mice (I give away old mice every 5-6 months:). Its sides are convex (as opposed to concave sides of logitech 500 series).

Readers should be warned that its shape is VERY unusual.

Edit: Just checked the new Jakup's rig pictures.
We have the same headphones. Aren't they the bomb?!

Oh hell yea :D They are awesome.. I really love them.

Yea I used to have a 518... the shape on the copperhead took a while to get used to. At first it was VERY uncomfortable, but I am used to it now, and I like it better :)

I just can't see myself giving up my mx1000 anytime soon :(

Good review btw.

For future reference, how bout a before and after pic of improvement in skillz by playing an fps like Counter-strike :rofl

Increased killz == early adoption :D

I moved from the MX1000 to this mouse and so far love it. The MX1000 is now used on my video editing box and I will keep this on my gaming rig.

One problem I am experiencing with the latest firmware and drivers, is the ability to use programed buttons in BF2. I can use them in regular windows but in game, it's hit or miss.

Anyone notice this?

Also there is no support for this new mouse on their site, I guess I'll give them a chat online later this afternoon.

Other then the very short learning curve, I love my new mouse.

BTW very good review.

I love my Diamondback Plasma, but am very tempted by this. Just one thing though, are you sure the Copperhead doesn't come with a LANpack little bag thing? I really like my Diamondback one...

I really like my Diamondback one...Nope, there was no little neoprene mouse case included in the Copperhead packaging as there was with the Diamondback. I liked that little case too. Maybe Razer will toss that in with the upcoming Copperhead Toolkit. :)

@rudedog: I don't have the full version of BF2 so I'm not able to test your issue. Razer has been very prompt in answering any of my questions and they've kept the firmware and driver updates for the Copperhead coming at pretty good clip lately.

Great review Clay. I like how you bulleted your thoughts and kept comparing the diferences between the copperhead and the diamond back.

Good stuff,

I love this mouse but does anyone else find this mouse to be TOO smooth. What I mean is that it is so light, and along with the teflon feet there is almost no friction all my pads I have tried. I've tried 2 cloth pads, steelpad, func pads. Maybe I should just try using my desk ;).

Razer Pro-Tools is coming in November. You may have read about this product and there is some controversy over it so allow me to clear the air and explain why we did what we did.

a) We had explored the possibility of customizable weights from the outset - in fact we had announced this before the competition did so it’s not an issue of sour grapes. However, the problem with adjustable weights via a separate tool would result in what we called "structural jitter". Try picking up a mouse with adjustable weights from one of our competitors and shake it, you’ll feel (hear even) the weights shifting around inside. Not conducive for fast action gaming and definitely not for low sensors who swipe the mouse.

b) Any true changes to the buttons and internals would require the mouse to be opened and this should only be for very advanced users. All of this will increase cost of the mouse dramatically and we had taken the decision not to pass on the cost of this to the gamers as MOST would not want to customize their mouse. It’s like not everyone wants to soup up their machine.

c) The nature of the pro-tools is for high end, advanced modders who want to tweak and change their mouse. As there are advanced tweaks involved, this would mean that any changes would void the warranty of the mouse - it’s not for everyone, only the most discerning of gamers who want to change specific items that most gamers don’t need to.

Here’s what Razer Pro-Tools kit will consist of:

1x Custom case
1x set blank buttons
1x set weights (5g/10g/15g)
2x set replacement feet
1x screwdriver
Plus a free LANpak

If purchased separately you would have to spend over $30 for all of this …
The retail price will be $14.99. More to come on this later.

Looks like Razer will toss that in ;)

I just use my desk surface, I haven't used a mousepad since my last ball mouse years ago.

I love coming home to new hardware...

Anyway, the mouse is installed and the learning curve is beginning. I notice that the range of the laser receiver is pretty surprising, you can hover the muse about a 1/4" above the desk an it will sometimes pick up the motion. This makes pick/put down repositioning a little different when gaming.

The sensitivity? Yikes. I notice that at start up, it stays on ten until software loads. I wonder if there is a way to set the sensitivity for the log in screen.

Big question guys!!

I'm wanting to get one, but i can't give up a feature from my mx1000... Which is the scroll wheel is able to go sideways, ie you can scroll up and down, but also left and right...

can someone confirm if it has this feature or not?

The Razer Copperhead does not have the horizontal scroll wheel feature.

WOW! thanks Man, you sold my choice really... thanks for such a quick reply.

note people that sideways scroll can be extra buttons too (perfect for leaning)...

Looks like I will have to get a logitech one then eventually

I still have my mx1000... but I've lost the charger cord!!! so messed up and not happy about that

Yea I really wish it had side to side scrolling also... it would be great for leaning.

Clay

I never thought about mapping leaning to the side scrolling...awesome idea. I don't use leaning simply because I don't like bothering with two more keys to mess with. If I could bind it to the horizontal scroll wheel I'd lean all the time.

Leaning gets on my nerves. Don't know why. It just does.
