I remember a forum member who was very active around the time of the Geforce FX 5800U release called "Uttar".

He was very knowledgeable and had some very good insights into up coming Nvidia products...

Just wondered if he's still active on the nvnews boards or what his thoughts are on the latest generation of cards?

Anyways...

Yep, that info is BS. Here's some slightly more reliable although less precise info at least, but don't kill me if it ain't right.
G71: 16PS, 500-600Mhz, 128-bit memory bus. Less than 16 ROPs.
G72: 8PS, 450-550Mhz. No info about the ROPs.
G7x: 32PS, over 600Mhz at least in "some ways". I heard

When I say G7x, it's because I'm unsure whether the proper codename is G73,G74 or G75. I have yet to hear or read anything from anyone that's more than guesswork on this subject. Don't expect G7x before Q1 2006, most likely "late Q1 2006" or even early Q2 in fact. mid-february is the absolute minimum. Short-term, NVIDIA's answer will be a 24PS/8VS G70 with clockrate tricks ala Quadro (there was a respin afaik since it'll remain part of their product line until G80, but I'm unsure about this).
Something I'm surprised there's no info on, actually, is whether the G71/G72 have a chip-part-dependant clockspeed ala G70GL.

Anyhow, here's what I know regarding NVIDIA's desktop standalone productrange for Christmas 2005, I'd say it's quite solid:
$49 to $79: GeForce 6200(TC)
$99: GeForce 7200 (8PS)
$149: GeForce 7200 Ultra (8PS)
$199: GeForce 7600 (12PS)
$249: GeForce 6800 GT + GeForce 7800 non-GT (16PS)
$299: GeForce 7600 Ultra (16PS)
$349-399: GeForce 7800 GT (20PS)
$449+: GeForce 7800 GTX (24PS)
$549+: GeForce 7800 Ultra (24PS)

The GeForces 6600s are being phased out, as should have been expected. The 6200s will be kept for a fair bit longer as NVIDIA's lower-end solution. The 6800s will only be fully replaced when the G7x hits (and the G70 drops in price, thus), although they really aren't a very, let us say, significant part of NVIDIA's roadmap anymore.
6200/7200/7600/7800/7900 will be NVIDIA's productline until Vista/G80, Q3/Q4 2006.

Anyhow that's what I know so far, just don't kill me if I'm wrong But yes, people wondering whether the X1300 will get competition before Christmas will be pleasantly surprised I think, at least unless it got delayed, which isn't entirely out of the question sadly, considering I haven't heard tape-out confirmations yet, although I would suspect it did tape-out a few days/weeks ago. The "GeForce" 6100 and 7600s were the ones the 90nm chips that taped-out.

EDIT: In case that wasn't obvious, there might be other G71/G72/G7x models than the ones I listed. However, afaik, there won't be a 4PS G72 at launch. G7x-wise, I'd expect one model at launch ala G70, followed by two other ones a bit later

seems like more people are suspecting nVIDIA of having a G70 resfresh soon.maybe the new 512 Mb card is the faster G70 based card but I highly doubt that, given the way nVIDIA dealt with refreshes back when GF6 Ultra was the big boy.but I'm always up for a good surprise!
there I repeated myself.

Well, logistically, nVidia has no need for a refresh at the moment, the 7800GTX kills the X1800XL, and the 7800GT competes with the X1800XL, and the mainstream/lowend segments are as they should. I could see nVidia maybe slipping out a 7600 or such, but not another high end part till at the earlies x-mas, but probably next year. What they are probably worried about is the R580.

If the X1800XT can keep up and periodically outperform the 7800GTX, especially in high resolutions with high AA/AF settings, then nVidia WILL need a refresh to compete with the R580 which will undoubledly surpass the GTX. Thus, the refresh part should be to compete with ATI's R580, not the 1800XL. So if they release a refresh anytime soon, I'll be stunned.

On the flip side:

If nVidia DID release a refresh before we see R580 or even the 1800XL, then they once again will rack in more income over all. You know, be the first to lauch with product available at launch a couple months before the competitions, thus having a couple months of more income generated than the competitor.

That'd be the only reason I could see nVidia releasing a refresh earlier than x-mas or next year.

you mean 1800XT dont you.

yep If nVIDIA releases a stronger G70 card with instant availability before the end of November,it would be like giving ATi a second blow before they had time to recover from the first one.

the perfect crime hehe

If Nvidia wants answer to X1800XT then i think they will do very fast

if not then i think they will just wait the R580

anyway what i think is 99% sure is a 512MB G70 card, what is not obvious is if there will be speed increases

but if at that time a gtx will be 399$
then ..
512MB + higher speed = huge price!

There were a lot of guys who used to post here who do not for various reasons.

Uttar dropped off the radar for a bit but then resurfaced and has posted quite a bit over at b3d.

others like Chalnoth also are quite active over there at the moment. They used to post here a while back but for various reasons have limited their posting.

Uttar was corresponding with me at the time he stopped participating on graphics forums. His withdrawal was for personal reasons--not unrelated to the graphics industry, but not as a result of the NV30 debacle.

AFAIK Uttar never really 'left' Beyond3D, like he did other sites, but on his own site he stopped graphics commentary entirely, and now posts info about a game of some sort that I never explored.

Hmmm... intriguing comments, if not a little mysterious :D

Not wishing to be mysterious. I wish, rather, not to speak for Uttar, so I'll offer his own words: http://www.notforidiots.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=47

While too polite to mention specific personal affronts, Uttar revealed only a general angst with the graphics industry, publishing his last editorial (http://www.notforidiots.com/ULE.php) immediately before he abandoned most graphics forums, notably his own.

The editorial is a masterpiece. Uttar's outsider analysis accurately matched my experiences as an NVIDIA employee.
