This card performs like 6800GT and has 256-bit memory interface. Nvidia positions it both price and performance-wise up against rival ATI's X1600XT and X1600PRO.

that means no 7600 soon ??

It's just another variant based on the cheaper NV42 core. Probably meant ot dry up their stock and thus short lived. A 90nm 7600 should probably be more cost effective

7600 series should be here early next year.

Theres no point of making 7600, cause you got the 6800 and the 7800 gt. The 7600 will probably perform somewhere in between the two cards.

6800 GS to retail for $249, I think retailers will sell it much less than recommended retail prices in next few weeks. TigerDirect are currently selling 7800 GT at $299.99 (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1549681&Sku=B52-1030&SRCCODE=GOOPROD&CMP=OTC-FROOGLE), that $50 more than 6800 GS, all retailers will likely cut the 7800 GT prices down to $299 when Nvidia official cut the prices in December as they said here will be no cut before christmas.

nVidia better cut that price down a bit if they even hope to contend with the X800GTO/X800XL.

This is probably to compete with the $170 (street pirce) X800GTO.

whole point of "7600" would certainly be reduced costs... aka 90nm

How soon depends on how far along they are in manufacturing them.. we've seen with R520 how long setbacks could be.. but this is just simple die shrink so at most 6months... (but dont know when they started! now? 6months ago?)

The article says "coming few weeks" and it's set to compete with the X1600Pro/XT so we *should* probably see it around mid november.

ATI's Radeon X1600 generation was killing Nvidia's Geforce 6600 generation and Nvidia had to do something. The Geforce 6800 GS looks like a suitable riposte. Suggested retail price for 256MB part is $249.

Kind of difficult for me to swallow theregister nowadays, if you know what I mean. Nothing is killing 6600GT or 6800.. especially not X1600 which doesnt even exist. And this is ofcourse ignoring all the benchmarks, many of which show little benefit of X1600XT (the new ATI mainstream flagship) over the old 6800 (nu). The new PCIE 6800 cores are already 110nm, and if nVidia wanted another card to fill space between ~$300 6800GT (http://www.pricewatch.com/ shows as low as $285), simply slap faster memory than existing 300Mhz (DDR600) used on the 256MB versions and raise core speed a bit. It's so ridiculously easy to beat the X1600XT(X800XL < $240), I'm starting to think that theregister article was satire.

if 7600 is about the half of 7800GTX like 6600 is of 6800GT then it's gonna be pretty much 6800GS. right?
how fast is 7600 gonna be? 500mhz or 600mhz core.
I am considering putting together a mid level game rig with 6800GS or I will wait for 7600@90nm. is it worth it?

I don't know how you plan on waiting for a card that doesn't exist and has never been announced, so maybe it would make most sense to go with what DOES exist?

yeah like what superklye says...

I dunno how to say it, so I'll just spill it, and let you in on the ghoulish secret that everybody's been keeping from you:

faster video cards will come in the future!
*dun- dun dun*

Finally, you decide you'll do it. You'll be cool. You'll play QuakeGL. You'll be accelerated! But, just as you get excited about TNT, rumours of TNT2 hit. You were about to lay out your cash, and noticed a countdown on nVidia website. Suddenly you're seeing double.. DDR that is. Just when you though it was safe to invest, GF2 GTS comes out. You don't have the cash, so think of sprining for the MX but then find out that you'll be missing the whole DX8 shaders party. And then, the moment you finally find peace with a super-bargain GF4-4200, your whole world comes crashing down the red floating point pipeline. Yes, things are really heating up now. And just as you got caught up in the storm, you get your 2nd 256bit wind. But, strange benchmarks of unreleased sequels and tech demos look back at you through the abyss as you try to rationalize putting off your purchase for just one more month.

There will always be something faster just around the corner.. but who cares: you can't buy "futures" in happiness... best you can do is get the best value for your budget and enjoy your time rather than stressing about it.

The 7200/7600 are rumored to be pin to pin compatible with current designs.

This is a good thing from the integrators perspective as they can re-use current designs (even AGP) and yet take advantage of what the G7x family has to offer. Performance wise, however, I don't expect a big jump.

yeah, I understand all of that.
but you have to admit there have been some stand-out good value cards in the evolution of things. a big reason for me to wait for 7600 is that it might be cooler and quieter than *800 class cards. I want to have a mid level game rig that's also my media center. don't know how that's gonna turn out. I wish there were a 6800GS with a custom cooler.
as far as 7600 using the same board design as 6600, that's another indication 7600's coming sooner.
