Ya its a shame the size of drivers these days. They used to fit on floppies yrs ago, sheesh.

I don't even have the Logitech drivers installed (they kept crashing on system start-up last time I installed them) and the mouse seems to be working just fine.

No problems with it here. I'd get rid of the background software but then the application switcher button wouldn't do anything. Right now I have it set to ctrl+F1 which is my nview hotkey for moving an app to the next display. G4 on my keyboard also does the same thing now but I want the mouse to do it too :P. Sidescroll won't be usable either.

2.46 made a marked improvement on the way my MX1000 handles, still want a Copperhead though

For some reason, this new driver doesn't save recognized games in the advanced game settings.

Yeah, neither do I. With them installed, I can't use the side buttons on my mouse in games. And it seems to work just fine without them.
That was the really old drivers as it did it too me also. I notifed them and they had a new driver out within a week.
