How good am I to you guys,

The OpenAL Installer for Windows will install the OpenAL 1.1 library, enabling support for core OpenAL operations as well as extensions such as EAX. The installer supports any 32-bit version of Windows.

Updated October 19, 2005 -- Version 1.8.0Version note -- Installs OpenAL32.dll version 6.14.357.11 and wrap_oal.dll version 2.0.0.0.

Changes and Bugfixes --

The wrapper has been updated to support OpenAL 1.1 functionality.

The router has been updated to fix a bug where instability or a crash could result from installing a native Creative OpenAL library and then removing the device without removing the driver.

Does this work on Creative cards only, or can people using things like Realtek integrated audio download it as well?

Well the files themselves originate from OpenAL, assuming you have an OpenAL compliant chip it would'nt hurt to try - if it fubars your sound then just navigate to the System32 folder and remove the two files.

Anyone know which onboard soundchips support OpenAL? I have an ALC850 in my home system and Nforce2 Soundstorm in my work system.

I think the more important question, is which games support OpenAL?

Doom3 is one.

Yeah, honestly, other than people mentioning OpenAL here and there, I've never heard of anyone using it or anything.

There's a link to some of the titles that use it on that page and a description of what it is exactly. BF2 is listed too.

According to that site, it looks like DirectSound3D is part of the OpenAL spec. I would therefore assume that any onboard sound chip that support DS3D also support OpenAL.

Your right assuming the vendor has support for the API in the drivers

Also, if you get stuttering in BF2 for the first 10-20 seconds of the map, there's a trick you can use to replace the game's software OpenAL drivers with Creative's hardware ones. I think you take the openal32.dll file from the Windows/System32 directory and replace the one in the BF2 directory with it (though the BF2 one is named something different I believe, so you have to rename the one you grabbed from the Windows directory).

Oh, and Jedi Knight 2 also uses OpenAL.

OpenAL has support for DirectSound3D via a wrapper which translates all OpenAL calls. It's provided by the "wrap_oal.dll" file. This means that even on-board audio works with OpenAL games although they'll just output basic 3D positional audio.

Insn't this for developers not end-users? I don't think you need to install it.

I found no change in performance or quality with this update.

They're just slightly newer versions of the openal32.dll and wrap_oal.dll already included in the new beta Audigy driver.

Both are made by Creative, with input from Nvidia for compatibility (I think).
