The only thing I don't like about openoffice is that it is pretty boaty. It can take a long time to load on even a fast system.

Would you guys say this is any better than MS Office 2000? I played around with the 1.9 beta's for a few hours, but I didn't really notice any difference from Office 2000, so I stopped using it.

We're currently looking into installing OpenOffice in the school I work at, purely because the money we are looking to spend on new Office Licences could buy us two nice new servers.

I used to like OOo because it was less buggy and less bloated than MS office, but MS office has improved much in that respect, and now it beats OOo in both stability and speed.

I'll definitely look into this. I used an older version of OO before, but I didn't like the way it was handling certain documents and spreadsheets so I went back to MS Office.

Has anyone tried this update yet?

OO calc offers a different option when merging data filled cells........ thus enabling creation of the timo ticker for the fad stats :D

I've been using it a little bit and have come to this conclusion...

If you have NO or little money, get this. It will do what you need to do and isn't to bad.

If you have some money, buy Office 2000/XP.

Lots of money, buy 2003.

Open office is useful enough, but many of the menu's seem slugish and the windows have this "cheapy" feel to them in my opinion. If you can't do any better, it really isn't bad at all, but if you have office you should definetly use it over this.

I would use OO2 over ANY MS product (yes, including Office 2003)

This version is awesome. I'll admit, OO1 had some bloat, it took like 15-20 seconds to open my simple budget spreadsheet. In OO2, it took less than 4 seconds.

They have really cleaned up this version. It's slow to install, but the programs open fast, and have better compatibility. Not to mention, alot of companies, gov'ts and schools are moving to OO. It is THAT good. If were to vote for product of the year, OO2 would be it.

One thing to be aware of OpenOffice 2.0 though: you want to have the current Sun Java VM installed before installing OpenOffice 2.0.

It does work well on my homebuilt Athlon 1.66 GHz system, though the initial load does take a little while due to the need to access some Java code.

I hate Java. Does anyone else share this feeling?

Windows and menu's have an odd feeling to them in many apps. Sometimes choppy, sometimes just "not right". Often very slow.

That would be a reason that I'm a bit biased against OpenOffice, I guess. For system portability, I agree, Java is great. That's about the only nice thing I can say about it.

I love Java, but it could be cleaned up because the VM is making Java apps slow. Yet, I love OpenOffice. I completely ditched Office XP and the .doc format when I started this school year. Now I only type my notes in .odt and whoever needs my notes must get OOo :p

Openoffice.org 2.0 is great.

At my office I slapped together a p3 866 with 256 megs of ram and it runs fine on there for viewing and editing spreadsheets.
