Since people are always asking what the best *insert PC part here*, I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread where we gather concensus. Maybe at the end we could get an official "nVidiot's reccomended PC". It could even be a quarterly thing :D. Keeping in mind we're enthusiasts but usually on a bit of a budget.

Lets see what we can come up with for

CPU: price/performance?
Motherboard: future proof/overclockable?
RAM: price/performance/amount
Storage: SATA/ATA? Size?
Vid card: (well we know what this is gonna be ;))
Sound card: price/performance
Monitor: PRICE/performance
Mouse/KB: look/feel
Speakers and Headphones: price/quality
Case: Features/Quality
Cooling solutions: Ease of use/Quality
PSU's: Quality
Others: (for those gadgets we know and love)

Ok folks, lets hear it!

...I hate to have to think before I've had a full cup of Jo ///
These are mt "price vs. performance" picks...which is what I think sytaylor was asking for:

CPU: price/performance = A64 4000+ (SD)
Motherboard: future proof/overclockable/ = take your pick of the nf4's
RAM: price/performance/amount = the OCZ 2gb sets
Storage: SATA/ATA? Size? = SATA2 250gb HDs
Vid card: (well we know what this is gonna be ) = hehe
Sound card: price/performance = Audigy2 ZS
Monitor: PRICE/performance = Dell 2005FPW
Mouse/KB: look/feel = Logi MX or G series
Speakers and Headphones: price/quality = Logi Z-5300e
Case: Features/Quality = just use one :)
Cooling solutions: Ease of use/Quality = Arctic Cooling(Air), Koolance(liquid)
PSU's: Quality= AeroCool turbine(really)
Others: (for those gadgets we know and love)

Yeah I figured a midrange enthusiast rig... something we could wholeheartedly reccomend without feeling guilty about banking a n00b nVidiot :)

I like this list, except for the case and cooling solution.
I'd much rather have an XP90 (or XP90c/XP120), along with a much different case.
IMO the ASUS Vento is hideous...

/EDIT: for the storage I'd go with two 74GB Raptors instead..

I'll go with a Maxtor or a WDC before I touch ANYTHING that's called "DeathStar"! :bleh:

And as for the case and cooling...I would suggest Koolance water cooling. It's cheap, and it gets the job done.

I agree with the case, there are much better one's out there like the one in my sig which is a big  with me. But the list overall rocks. Also the XP-120 has a new version called the XI-120 which I would also recommend

Would anyone recommend the Asus A8N-SLI?

Think DFI may have the edge when it comes to overclocking but when we're talking about stability, ASUS normally ranks at the top.

Wow that's way to much for me to bother with so I'll just throw out a couple select components I think aren't bad deals.

For video cards the 7800GT is ofcourse a good deal, with the X1800XL coming in a fairly close second. Also, the Western Digital WD3200 series are reasonably good drives for the price. I've seen the 320GB model (7200RPM, 8MB cache) go for as little as $115 after rebates. 3 year warranty, tough to beat that.

Oh, and ofcourse Dell flat panels if you find a good coupon code. The 2405FPW for $899 or less is a steal.

I threw the Asus Vento in there for the heck of it. I saw it up close and thought it looked strangely appealing (I'm wierd that way!:p ). I also picked the Hitachi for it's shear size!! 500GB WOOHOO!! :D The Cooler Master Hyper 6+ was a personal choice because I currently own it. It's a massive beast of a HSF. CPU: A64 X2 3800
Motherboard: Asus Nforce *.*
RAM: 1gig (or more) Crucial or Corsair w/ cas 2.5 (or faster); and I always recommend faster than DDR400 to give yourself a little overclocking room
Storage: Seagate 7200 RPM 8mb cache (SATA or ATA, whatever size fits your budget and needs)
Vid card: 6600GT for budget folks who don't play higher than 1024x768; 6800GT for midrange; 7800 anything for performance gamers; brand I don't care
Sound card: integrated, to hell with Creative ;)
Monitor: Viewsonic, Samsung, Sony, or Nec 19" LCD with 12ms (or faster) response time
Mouse/KB: Logitech MX518, nough said
Speakers and Headphones: el cheapo walmart special boombox, as long as it's loud and clear
Case: simple Cheiftec Dragon style cases, I dont care about brand or specific model so long as it's similar to this style with plenty of fan slots and aluminum material
Cooling solutions: air cooling, I look for high CFM with low db
PSU's: Antec True or Neo, nough said
