"...Besides the hardware way of remaking RADEON 9500 128MB into RADEON 9700 by transistor re-soldering, discovered by our colleagues from Overclockers.ru, we, together with Alexey Nikolaychuk (aka Unwinder), the creator of RivaTuner , hoped to perform the same by software. Essentially, it was to find 4 missing rendering pipelines "hidden" by ATI, as R9500 has 4 and R9700 already 8 of them.

Alexey succeeded in finding the blockade and got through using RADEON 9500 64MB. As you know, this card has 128-but bus, so you can’t make R9700 from it, only RADEON 9500 PRO 64MB. But we’ve checked Soft9700 on RADEON 9500 128MB and, voila, we got a complete RADEON 9700.

So, we can state the 100% software pare-down of R300. This method of remaking will be available for everyone in the next version of RivaTuner..."

Yeah - there seems to be a very low success rate without getting artifacts afterwards right now though.

Urgh! :(

You guys go get your 9500 while I play with my heavily oc'ed R9700 which clocks you guys will never hit. :)

Do you guys realise what this could mean for 9500 sales?
Or, alternatively, how bad this could be for 9700 sales?

I don't think this will make any differences to both R9500 and R9700 sales until many people reports 100% success with the mod AND the mod is easy to do enough. I believe there are many people out there that willing to pay the price of R9700if they want R9700 performance :) After all, after doing the resister mod, the warranty is gone.

well at least you can overclock a bit more ;)
not hat I ever even felt the remote need for overclocking this card (yet)

heh, not much, my particular card is a fairly poor overclocker. Will only do like 380 Core (with a waterblock) and 680 Mem.

I'd still buy the 9500 Pro rather than the normal 9500. Then I'd only wait till my games don't want to run properly with 3X AA and 4X AF (Or whatever the medium settings are.) before I flash the card for 9700 speeds. By the early indication that may still be waaay off. The 9500Pro is just that powerful already.

PS, isn't it sorta fun talking about the powerful mid-range ATI cards that outperform the Ti4600's. I can't remember ever talking on an ATI thread where an ATI owner could say: "Whatever, my mid-range card outperforms your high-end."

Yo K.I.L.E.R calm down, calm down :)
What speeds u hitting then??? Be trueful now;)
I have succesfully done the mod and with everything at stock i can run 3dmark with no artifects @ 368/337 with my sapphire 9500 128mb hynix 3.6ns ram.
This is the standard ati cooling heatsink and no ramsinks:D
i believe there is a lot in this puppy still, heehee:eek:

I wont be able to find out till after the 23rd Jan seeing that i am a final yr graduate and have *hit loads of work to do by then:(

Enjoy your card i wish i had time too.

the medium settings are 16xAF and 2xAA for a 9500pro...

the only problem with it is that it has only a 128bit mem bus, the 9500np with the mod (hardware or software) still keeps it's 256bit bus, so a 9500P will never be a 9700, you can oc it to 9700pro clockspeeds, but you'll still have half the mem bandwidth...

it's so cool @ lans showing off doom3 with 4xAA and 16xAF @ 1024 :)

Huh? 9500 Pro is capable to pushing 256bit bus and that's exactly what were talking about, ofcourse you wont o/c as high with 9500, but not all 9700's are good o/c's to ;)

I think you need to get your facts straight about this mod, dude. You posted late in the game about the software hack and now you're claiming a "9500 Pro is capable to pushing 256bit bus and that's exactly what were talking about" which is totally wrong.

Well I bought the damn 128 meg 9500 yesterday. Unwinder seems very confident that his hack will work, now I just gotta wait for my card, then wait for the next rivatuner to come out. Waiting for everything it seems these days. And if it doesn't work, I guess I could just put it in my comp at work and enjoy the "Never before experienced 2D quality!"
Just xmas money anyway, but I was gonna buy the xp2400...then I let the glare of the leetest hack cloud my eyes.

no, all the 9500pros came with the 9500 standard PCB, so they have a 128bit mem bus. the 9500 non-pro 128mb are the ones whose initial (and current i think) batches were produced in the 9700 PCB therefore they have the 256bit mem bus.

9500 64mb - 275/270 / 4 pipes / 64mb on 128 bit bus
9500 128mb - 275/279 / 4 pipes / 128mb on 256bit bus
9500pro - 275/270 / 8 pipes / 128mb on 128bit bus
9700 - 275/270 / 8 pipes / 128mb on 256bit bus
9700pro - 325/310 / 8 pipes / 128mb on 256bit bus

what the mod does is only enabling the extra 4 pipes disabled in the 9500.

the result of all this? the 9500non-pro 64mb since it has a 128bit bus, when moded becomes a 9500pro 64mb. the 9500non-pro 128mb has the 256bit bus, so when moded becomes a 9700 because it has the 256bit bus due to using the 9700 PCB.

why is the 9500 128mb on a 256bit PCB and the 9500pro not? remember that there's a reason for the delay in the 9500pros, the 128bit PCBs were delayed.

remember that ati can always overcome software mods in their drivers...

I hope they can overcome the real problems with their drivers first, just a joke.

in the past couple of months, they've been addressing all problems like there's no tomorrow or something, it's impressive, in only 2 weeks they adressed the OGL stutter, 16bitAA and a incredible amount of game-specific issues, mostly related to when you force AA on them.
and they already reported that they are handling some other issues some people requested @ R3D, like the madden 2003 weather issue, it's impressive

Software mod for making ur 9500 into a 9700 is out...

Check the rage3d forums.

Poor guys who bought 9700 got owned by ATI :D it's always more wise to wait a bit for stuff like this to happen.

I got my little 9500 running faster than a 9700 pro and it works so sweet. 9700/pro = ripoff.
