Looks like you can give your 9500 a 256 bit bus by resoldering a single resistor and using the bios that allows you to overclock the 9500 Pro.

Moded Rad 9500 Hehe pretty cool they get same performance and then some by overcloaking :D

sweet! hmm... interesting, I think I'll get this one instead. :D

LMFAO!!! :D

I just thought these 2 words are really funny. :)

I think that it is a plain vanilla R9500 that has been hacked from its 4x1 128 bit version to the ultimate hackers nirvana :afro2:

Omg, that's awesome. Assuming this actually works, I feel bad I didn't get a 9500 :(

That is tempting, too bad ATi still doesn't have good linux drivers. :/

It's time to get a 9500pro NOW... the benchmarks are phenominal just a little easy solder and you have a card which MATCHES the performance of the radion 9700pro !

Thats basically you getting the perofmance of a $300 card for $150 !

The radion 9500pros were a GREAT deal before this now it's even better leaving nvidia in the dust.

I'm temped too, but I'm gonna wait for the cheapy GF FXs, and see what they can do...

they're not talking about the Pro version
and btw it enables both the 256 bit bus AND the full 8 pipelines :D
ie in every way possible it turns into a real 9700 :D
then you overclock it to (or past) 9700 Pro :D

Next thing we see is people modding GFFX's. :P

Interesting. This would mean that the 9500 (non-pro), 9500 (pro), and 9700 (non-pro) are all nearly the same product from a manufacturing point-of-view. In other words, these three cost about the same to produce (assuming same volume being produced):clocked the same frequencies, using 256-bit memory, using the same amount of memory, etc.. The 9700 (pro) would be the higher clocked verison of this product and thus cost more to produce.

Anyway, since the costs of the 9500s and the 9700 (non-pro) are about the same, the prices are obviously quite different.

not the pro, this is a hack to enable the 4 pipelines that are disabled in the 9500non-pro, the 9500pro already has them and the transistor is also in the correct place.

and to make a 9700 from the 9500, you have to use a old 9500 128mb, the one that still uses the 9700pcb, only that has the 256bit mem bus, making this hack in any other 9500non-pro only makes it a 9500pro as it has a 128bit mem bus.

this happens because the hack itself only enables the 4 disabled pipes in the 9500, does not touch the memory in any way.

no, the cost of the 9500 and 9700 are not the same, in the first samples of the 9500 non-pro 128mb were due to the use of 9700's pcb, now they are not as they due to the 128bit mem bus , use a simple pcb with fewer layers.

Enough technobable.

I feel sorry for all of those who shelled out big time for a 9700 when the rest of us can score big and pay little.

I've allready ordered my 9500 128mb which works with this hack LOL!

I have a question.
A while back i read that the 9500s were coming from yields of 9700s that didnt quite make it.(if one pipe or something didnt work, they killed 4 or something..while back..dont recall) So they killed 4 pipes and such to make it the 9500s.

Now does this mean that some people could go through the trouble of soldering, and whatnot to make their 9500 a 9700...only to find out they got one that had defects in the pipes, and wont work?

Then what are you stuck with?

I was under the impression there were reasons for some cards becoming 9500s and not full fledged 9700s. Just wonder if its a crapshoot, or if they are all going to work when "upgraded".

or could it be that the demand for 9500 is greater than the supply so even cards that passed for 9700 use are used for 9500. like nvidia did with the ti4200.

rather
ATi wanted to push out the card on the market quick, they didn't have the final PCB for 9500 designed yet and anyways just using the existing ones would be faster

I'm a bit confused, is it just a resolder job or is there a little bitty resistor that needs moving around in there ?

thcdru2k
01-07-03, 12:47 AM
looks like resolder job on resistors under the heatsink

That would make sense but i've seen pictures of the chip with little golden cubes in between soldered points, looks like maybe resistors to me.

Also some guy on rage 3d said he lost the resistor so i think it's a physical component on the outside of the chip, no biggy they just dont look like normal resistors :o

check this thread out @ R3D: http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?s=&threadid=33657738

you'll have to switch the position of the transistor as seen in http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/story.html?id=1041719082

check further down the thread for details and disaster prevention methods, watch it, it's a *very* dangerous mod.

I think to be safe I'll just get a 9500Pro and flash the beast.

Mmm, that didn't come out quite right.

That's right. The 9500 is a 9700 that did not pass some of the tests, just like a Celeron is a Pentium that did not pass all the tests. It may have barely failed the tests (maybe it runs slightly hotter or something) or it may have a major failure in one of the pipelines. You are taking a big gamble in trying this mod as it may not work at all or the card may just not be stable.

Some people have reported wierd graphics in some games / benchmarks... who cares.

Real men take risks if they got balls. It's a good card for the money even WITHOUT the mod.

So plz shut it.
