Im abit puzzled right now.
At first when I got my new computer parts and put it all together my cpu temp was around 35c @2040mhz using the volcano 9 running at around 4000 rpm. I then used the gigabyte @flash utility to update the bios. Later that day I noticed that the cpu temps had rised to about 39-40c idle @2009mhz, a bit weird I thoght since it never got over 38c before even on load. Today I checked gigabytes website and found an even newer bios, so I downloaded it and flashed it, now the cpu temp is around 33-34c @2040mhz
Im also not sure why the mhz was lower when I first upgraded the bios (system bus was automaticly lowerd from 136 to 134) and now its back to the same as they day I put it all together ... and the cpu temp has been lowerd about 1c
So could a bios update affect cpu temps ?

i dont think it would
There has been some talk over at amdmb.com about the BIOS for the EPOX 8k3a+ and the difference in CPU temp readings with certain BIOS's. It seems that for these boards the CPU temp can be read by the the die diode or the socket diode. This has only been seen with the Tbred chips though. So, I guess CPU temp reading can have something to do with the BIOS.

Although my Mobo is a much older board (see sig), I recently flashed the BIOS to the latest version, and my CPU temps altered drastically. They used to be 33 Deg C idle, 44 Deg C load. They are now 42 Deg C Idle, and 45 Deg C load. Work that one out! The VIA HW Monitor reported temps do match the ones in the PC Health Status in the BIOS.
I've never been able to overclock the FSB either, even though I have PC150 CAS2 RAM. The new BIOS has allowed me to overclock the FSB a little (as much as I've tried, not too bothered TBH) up to 136Mhz. Gave me 1370Mhz out of a T-Bird 1200...

I know exactly what you are talking about with the temp increase on the kt7a. There was more info on it somewhere in the kt7a faq over on Sudhain.com (formerly viahardware.com)

i dont know if a bios update would give changes in temp., but i do know that a bios update can give a more accurate temp. reading, making it seem like it changes the temp.

Well i remember reading that blurb about the abit board i had in the past and yes it does increase it by 10 degrees. It had something to do with one of the bits in the board that affects the cpu idle process. They changed it to add stability and try to work with the whole sblive problems that were notorious.

i believe you are referring to the wpcredit bit...that would effect the temp.

Sometimes, the BIOS can read tempertures wrong. One of the BIOS updates for my ECS K7S5A was like 5 degrees off, meaning my CPU 5 degrees hotter than what it said. Didn't like that idea at all. Luckily, ECS has a new BIOS the very next day that took care of it.

Thanx for all the imput on the subject. :)
Hopefully the cpu/mobo temps can be trusted as they are now.

I bet it was just a change in temperature reading accuracy, not real CPU temperature.
For example, using a newer version of Asus Probe also raised my CPU temp! :p It's all about software aproximation to the real value.
