Damn :( Link went down :(
Its 2.8GHz, Dual Core, and they had a few Ziff CPU benchies.

This is, no doubt, where the bleeding-edge types grab their towels, clean up, and start setting aside their checkbooks...

Page's back up...it likely got (and is still being) slashdotted. And, yes, they have pictures...including a price list (http://www.pcpop.com/doc/App/ImageShow.aspx?category=article&sn=000160341).

(As an aside: the price list also shows the X2 5000+...!)

Too bad this thing will probably cost more than 1 grand. It's ridiculous how much the FX series costs. Even an FX-55 is still $800. I can buy a 4000+ and overclock it higher than that with the stock heatsink and save myself $500 dollars. I mean, honestly, is the FX series REALLY worth the insane amount they charge for it?

This should cause the 4800+ to drop in price pretty significantly.

This thing is gonna be like 1300 bucks when its launches. But it looks awesome.

I don't like that it's not an odd number anymore.

And the FX line seems kinda unnecessary now. It's got what, 1MB cache for each core...so does the 4800...what's the difference anymore?

And I thought the FX line was staying single core for some time still...?

Yeah, I would have rather seen a single core 2.8ghz 2mb L2 than another dual core. This thing just sounds like an expensive 4800+

When will AMD ever hit the 3.0 mark? Theyve been in the 2's for years now. While they have made improvements, many at that, Im still waiting for them to hit 3.0GHz.

Agreed, Superklye, should have called it the FX-59 and when they finally do hit 3GHz, call it the FX-60 or 61 even

Q: Wiill the AMD Athlon 64 FX processor continue to be AMD’s performance leader?
A: We expect that the AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core processor will be the world’s best performing processor for multitasking, multi-threaded and digital media applications. The AMD Athlon 64 FX processor will continue to be the best performing processor in the world for single-threaded 3D games.

Looks like Multi-threaded games are about to make a splash then?

This is just a 4800/x2 + 400mhz. I agree the FX name seems to be less relevant than ever.

Apparently they really are up against a wall. IBM never hit 3.0 w/the G5 either. Looks like these are just very difficult engineering challenges they are running into.

They probably changed it to even numbers so they wouldn't have to call it FX-69 in the future :D

And Riptide, remember, all the FX series had unlocked multi's, so I think that will be the biggest difference.

LOL
And Riptide, remember, all the FX series had unlocked multi's, so I think that will be the biggest difference.Only people with some serious cooling can utilize that though. At 2.8 that thing is probably not going to have a lotta headroom. So most will leave it the same or reduce it in order to jack the fsb up.

You guys have probably already seen this. If not, these are X2 numbers in SS2:

Wow SS2 is multi threaded nice very nice. Also mutli is the further the diffrence from from the X2 and FX is, unlocked multipliers and cherry picked cores for overclockers.

Riptide
11-10-05, 03:47 PM
LOL cherry picked cores my rear end. My FX53 didn't overclock for crap. The multiplier unlocked was completely and totally worthless.

But still, I really think they need to do something a little more for the FX processors to make them worth the ridiculous amounts of money they charge, because seriously, a 400MHz boost from a 4800 is nothing. There should be, like, 2MB cache per chip or something.

Riptide
11-10-05, 04:00 PM
Oh I agree though I will say 400MHz is pretty significant - previously the only thing they were doing was bumping it up by 200MHz between the different models. Plus now you get two cores instead of one.

FX53 - 2.4GHz /1 MB
FX55 - 2.6GHz /1 MB

This unlocked multiplier bull**** is only going to help someone with extreme cooling. I doubt even water cooling would be enough to benefit from it. At least in most scenarios anyway.
