I use a cheiftec 420 watt PSU that has a 20 pin power cable. I've noticed that most of the motherbaords come with a 24 pin power socket, Does my power supply with the 20 pin works on a motherboard that uses a 24 pin ?

I would not recommend it but I have a system with power furnished by an Enermax 550W 20-pin and have no problems so far. The board is a Gigabyte 24-pin 939 with a 3200+ running 2.2GHz that I use for surfing the net, word processing, photo processing/viewing, etc. No problem with lite gaming but I only say 'lite' because it has a TC6200Q video card.
If I were you I would opt for a 24-pin, version 2.0 or better, psu when upgrading to a new motherboard.

I can't change my PSU because where I live all PSU are non branded PSU.
So basically it will work!
