Xbox.com: Will there be any benefits to playing original Xbox games on my Xbox 360 console?

Todd: Absolutely. One of the great things about gaming on Xbox 360 is the satisfaction of knowing that every game will be playable in high definition. We are now proud to reveal that this extends to the original Xbox games as well. Every original Xbox game will be upscaled to 720p and 1080i, and will take advantage of Xbox 360’s anti-aliasing capabilities, delivering a picture that is clearer and crisper than anything available on Xbox.

Holy crap, nice. Although, when they say upscaled, do they mean only in their original resolution and then just displayed at those formats, or will they actually run at 720p/1080i native? Seems like it would be hard to change the actual resolution without affecting GUIs and stuff. Still, the anti-aliasing is nice.

The list is pretty good though, it's supports more games at launch than I expected it would. Unfortunately 2 of the games I was really hoping it would support (Breakdown and Panzer Dragoon Orta) don't seem to be included...oh well, maybe they'll add them later.

Thats quite a list. There is also a rumor that Half Life 2 for the XBox will included some higher res textures on the DVD that will only be availible for the XBox 360. Sweet if true.

That would be nice, the textures are looking VERY disapointing in the Xbox edition. Considering the Xbox version of the game fits into 64MB, and the Xbox 360 would have access to 512MB, I don't think they'd have any problems at all putting the high-quality PC textures into the Xbox 360 version of the game. Although I wonder if they actually would've put that much effort into it.

No Conker Live and Reloaded!? :thumbdwn:

Conker uses quite a few graphic effects that they probably have problems emulating (my guess is that the same is true of most of the other major games that didn't make the list, like Splinter Cell). They'll probably add support for it later, if they manage to get it working.

wtf? no outrun 2 or burnout yet they choose to emulate barbie adventures?!

Seeing as many games in the BC list are not great hits, I think they just coded a basic emulator and only a handful (ie Halo) titles got a better treatment, like a dedicated executable.

I thought the xbox 360 was 256MB?

I'm pretty sure its 512MB's but I do believe that it shares the memory across the system.

Edge
11-12-05, 02:21 PM
Correct, 512MB shared between main RAM and the GPU, minus 40MB which is set aside for general system use (like the dashboard and Live and such). So if a developer wants, they could have 32MB of game data and have 440MB of textures.

NVidia is the one that's rolling in the dough $$

They had to license the technology from NV to back compat this list.

Dont think the PS3 wont do this too, because it will. They will back compat even the PS1 (as far as I have heard)
