Put together a new PC for my dad but I have run into a issue. First off this is what I put together for him:

AMD 64 3000+ skt 939
6200 turbo cache 256mb
1gig corsair ram
Aspire Qpack micro SFF case
Foxconn nforce 4 micro mobo
200gig HDD
WinXP SP2

And this DVD drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827152047

He has this vid camera that what he wants to do is take the camera hook it up to the pc and be able to transfer the video from the camera to the hard drive and then burn that video to a DVD and play it on the TV downstairs. I got him as far as transferring the video to the HDD and we were able to get it into a WMV format in movie maker. I figured we would just use Nero or something to burn it but it wouldn't work in the DVD player on the tv.

I think its an issue with the formats but Im not sure which one were supposed to use. Also whats the easiest *free* software to use to burn a WMV video to a DVD disc and play it on the tv? It would be best if we didn't have to pay for anything like using a open source program like OpenOffice.

More looking for the best ease of use and not so much a bunch of features. Just trying to keep it as simple as possible as its just for causal use.

Thanks.

download Ulead's movie studio program. It's not free, but they have a 30-day demo will all the features for you to try out.

And from what I understand, Adobe Premier 2.0 Elements is supposed to be amazing, also has a free demo and is only $100 if you want to keep it.

Otherwise, check out www.videohelp.com. they r0x0rz.

Well I guess what I need is a program that will let me choose to burn a WMV in -R or +R format.

You can't burn anything but an MPEG file to DVD. It has to be converted.

Ok I tried using nero to burn some stuff just now a few .mpg music videos. Im not sure what to use in nero. I tried UDF DVD but my player didnt read it. The player reads -R format and I used a -R disc. Im really confused...obviously

btw are mpg and mpeg the same thing?

So what type of burn do I choose in nero to burn a couple of .mpgs on a -R disc and have it play in a -R player? Or cant nero do it?

Nero can't do that. It has to be in the Video_TS folder in order for Nero to burn a video DVD. You have to use a program like Adobe Premier or the Ulead software to do what you want, and it'll take 2-4 hours to do that.

Is there a free program or a open source program that can do this for me? I mean since Ulead and Premier you have to pay for or 30day trial.

Like I said: www.videohelp.com

If anyone would know, the people there would. Just browse the downloads. I'm sure there is something free there. And how often is your dad going to be doing this? Won't a 30-day trial be enough to convert these few files he has?

ok ok Ill look there. And he would want to do this several times a year as he goes on trips and does other stuff with the camera. I put together this pc to last him at least 3+yrs to let him get what he wants done and he has asked me to setup all this for him.

Gotcha. Well, good luck finding the free stuff. If he's willing to pay $100, Premier elements is supposed to be amazing.

Got it. Nero Vision 4. Does exactly what I wanted. Very very easy to use for stupid people like me and its not horribly overloaded with features you dont understand. Got it workin downstairs and my dad was very happy with how it went hes gonna buy the package Nero 7. Only 80 bucks not too bad considering you get all that stuff. I think its a fair price.
