Nice find! Well it's decision time. Looks like i can expect an average 10fps increase over my 7800gtx 256MB in most games. But is that worth paying 500 for?

This looks weird to me, how can the X1800XT score only 8100 in 3DM05 on their review when all reviews showed the card score close to 9000? And 8400 for the GTX512? Pft, my BFG scores 8100 at 460/1300, I highly doubt those scores.

Nvidia ForceWare 81.87 for Nvidia GeForce video cards

hmmmm......81.87's, wonder how they got 3DMK05 to run with those drivers, i thought you needed the 81.89's

*edit* looks like they did have troubles with 05...
To our dismay, Nvidia really has maxed out their core and memory this time, leaving little headroom for fun. Using the below Nvidia software utility, we were only able to overclock the video card to 581 MHz core / 1.75 GHz memory (Default 550/1700). Furthermore, we also experienced a software issue between the Nvidia and Rivatuner overclocking utilities and 3DMark because any change in clock speeds would cause the desktop to become distorted and garbled upon starting 3DMark. Due to these marginal overclocks and difficulties, we omitted overclocked benchmark results as they would not have shown any significant performance gain in the first place.

The benckmarks taken using an FX were more indicative of what we were already expecting. Dismayed to hear that there isn't much overclocking headroom. Looks like getting 600/1800 is gold on air for those lucky enough to get a good clocker.

NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB is currently the fastest 3D gaming accelerator! That's a proved fact. It may be on a par with the X1800 XT sometimes, but on the whole it's much faster. Besides, the card possesses an excellent overclocking potential! Yes, its price is higher than that for the X1800 XT: $640 versus $599. But considering that the 7800 GTX 512MB is already available on sale (before the announcement!) and many cards are already on their way to the stores, their price may just as well drop to $600 or even lower.

now my only concern is how well 2x7800GTXs 512MB will work in regular SLI mobos which dosent give lots of space between the PCI-E slots.
if anyone can supply me with info on that it'll be greatly appreciated :)

Does anyone know if the current crop of waterblocks that fit on the 7800GTX 256 will also fit on the 7800GTX 512? Going this route woulde certainly alleviate the heat and tight fit issue on some SLI motherboards.

1) SLI-certifications calls for board manufacturers to allow sufficient space for two dual-slot cards to be used.

2) That cooler is nothing new - the same cooler has been seen on the Quadro cards, Leadtek's Extreme 256MB GTX and on Dell's propietary 256MB GTX cards. Both Leadtek's and Dell's cards work fine in SLI on any SLI board.

3) I have two 256MB GTXs running in SLI, and both have been fitted with a Zalman VF700. As the VF700 is effectively a dual-slot cooler, and as my DFI boards has one of the tightest SLI gaps in the business, and as it fits nontheless with a few mm clearance (as long as I don't fit the bridging plate of RAM sinks to the read of the second card), I can confirm with confidence that you won't have a problem.
