about Nvidia actually had and will release an 7800 Ultra.

If you read the review from beyond3d.com, you'll see the chip picture that showing 7800-U-A2.

It definetly an Ultra part of 7800, and now just changed the name as 7800GTX 512MB.

Im beginning to wonder why they didn't call it Ultra...

And Toms has to be the biggest retard site ever.

Up To 1 GB Video Memory With GeForce 7800 GTX 512 SLI

Tom's site really seems to have the worst reputation. I've heard him referred to as an idiot on more than one occasion. Makes me wonder how that site still exists sometimes.

And yeah they should've just called it the 7800 Ultra. Period end of story. I know why they did what they did but I disagree with it. Ultra would've been better.

I think the 90nm refresh will be "the" Ultra for this generation.

Josh talks about the name and why they didn't call it an ultra in this article:

My theory here: No Ultra for GTX 512MB, so NVIDIA can release an Ultra that cost $999:lol:

Edit: Ah...Josh's theory is similar as mine.

If ATI had gotten the R520 up and running as it should have been, both ATI and NVIDIA were planning on releasing their respective parts in late Spring and actually delivering parts about 1.5 months later (as they had done with all their previous parts).

LOL this is hilarious. So if it weren't for ATI having problems with R520 we probably would not have had the hard launch of the GTX. They were probably going to paper us just like before.

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to point this out.

Just one more time for posterity because I've seen it posted far too many times in far too many forums: 7800 FAQ (http://www.nvidia.com/page/geforce_7800_faq.html). Is there an "Ultra"? No. Is there a faster card? Yes. Are they the same thing? A rose by any other name...;)

This means that the final R520 chips off the line will be delivered in a late February timeframe for fulfilling the final orders for the X1800 series.
Holy cow, that's not a very long lifespan for a high-end chip!

It's funny that on the chip it actually printed as 7800-U:D
