I've picked up some interesting numbers from Anadtechs review that show ATIs new memory controller potential. Its interesting to see the % difference going from no AA to 4xAA with 7800GTX having a 6GB/S bandwidth advantage.

BF2 1600x1200 noAA - 7800GTX 512mb = 25% faster
BF2 1600x1200 4xAA - 7800GTX 512mb = 15% faster

Q4 1600x1200 noAA - 7800GTX 512mb = 37% faster
Q4 1600x1200 4xAA - 7800GTX 512mb = 17% faster

SCCT 1600x1200 noAA - 7800GTX 512mb = 15% faster
SCCT 1600x1200 4xAA - 7800GTX 512mb = 1% faster

IMHO the overall scores prove that 7800GTX is faster but I think ATI has done a very good job with its new memory controller that might actually give Nvidia some trouble in the future.

Indeed .. actually i think most of the X1800XT's power is coming from the highly efficient memroy controller. if nVIDIA just try to improve thier's just like this ...

The new 7800gtx 512 only has about 13% more memory bandwidth than the x1800xt though. ;)

Hmm didn't the new 512GTX also have a 512BIT ring bus?

Thats what THG's claimed , but i'm really not sure about that.

the fx has a 512 bit internal memory bus. for 256bit ddr to work you need a 512bit internal bus in the card. The "ring" part is what is important. It was explained over at b3d a while back.

nVidia are not changing their memory controller they are happy with it. So the G80 will be using the same controller also so no GDDR4 is supported as of yet. ATi planned for the future and support GDDR4 also.

Its obvious nv will develop a new/better/efficient mem controllor for the G80's.
For now, i think 512 GTX did what nv wanted to achieve with 'em.
Thats be the fastest card available!
Although im still curious abt the r580 performance!

ATI now has a pretty good idea of what nVidia is capable of with the G70 core. And with the Xbox360 out of the way they can better beef up the R580. I'm betting that, just like in the past, ATI will claim the performance lead by a slim margin. Except this time around ATI's cards will not only claim the lead (barely), but they'll also sport the same features/capabilities as nVidia's top card.

Honestly, ATI has been better with AA effeciency for a long time though

Yeah i am pretty sure ATi's team would be getting split up since the XBOX is now complete spread amoung the two teams. ATi have said more effort is being put into the R580. It could be that the R580 will be the first GDDR4 card on the market.

You also have to take into account the HUGE fillrate diffrence also.

13,200 Vs 10,000 It's quite a diffrence.

if i'm not mistaken the texel fillrate has increased as you mentioned , but the pixel fillrate is still lower than the X1800XT's (8800 Mp/s vs X1800XT's 10000 Mp/s)

I can only imagine the performance hit wen AA is applied with r580.
ATi here have donr an excellent job with AA performance hit.
Next gen of cards will be very intresting..

Yeah, here's a good chart that summarizes all of that.

Ati always had good aa numbers, even with the x800's.

Putting that chart into perspective really shows how unbelievably powerful the 7800 GTX 512 is. Wow.

And ATI still has the advantage in vertex shaders, because, while both have 8, ATI's are running at a much higher speed

Doesn't really show anything. Nvidia has always dominated ATI in the pure speed runs, and ATI has always had better AA efficeincy.

Those 2 need to f*** already and give us a card that does both.

I knew that mem controller had potential! Wonder how the R580 will improve upon this potential (if at all).

Well R580 should have faster memory and the controller scales very good with faster memory.

Exept one thing confuses me just a bit: It states that the G70 only puts out 16 pixels per clock, i.e 16 pixel pipelines as opposed to 24...

EDIT: Scrap that, just noticed the textures per clock column :o.

I'm betting that, just like in the past, ATI will claim the performance lead by a slim margin. Except this time around ATI's cards will not only claim the lead (barely), but they'll also sport the same features/capabilities as nVidia's top card.

Well ATI obviously had no idea what G70 was capable of back in May when Geforce 7800 GTX's box shots and specification leaked to Internet. They noticed the core was clocked 5MHz faster at 430MHz with the same features as 6800 Ultra but with a couple of new features and a 24 pipelines, ATI believed the 7800 GTX are around 15% faster than 6800 Ultra and they was pretty very happy with their original R520 that should be faster than both 6800 Ultra and 7800 GTX. Then ATI changed their mind about the June launch and moved it to July and took a seat back and let Nvidia do their launch first. After saw 7800 GTX launch, ATI had all the predictions wrong, their original X1800 XL at 400MHz and the flagship X1800 XT at 500MHz was completed destroyed by 7800 GTX at 430MHz, ATI had to spend a few more months re-tapeout R520 and tweaked to increased the clock aggressive caught it up to stay competitive with X1800 XL from 400MHz to 500MHz and the X1800 XT from 500MHz to 625MHz. If ATI sticked to the June launch and Nvidia went for 22 July launch then their original R520 would became the next NV30.

Now Nvidia is finished and done with G70 core, they now worked on G70 refresh, the secret weapon G71 based on 90nm process taped out in September due to launch in around February 2006 replace 7800 GTX launched in June. G71 will sport many new features that G70 cant do and lacked of, it will have improved memory controller, have more room to add 8 more pipelines as well have alot of headroom on the clock just like X1800 XT. ATI probably had some idea what G71 is capable of since they taped out R580 earlier in July, Nvidia still have lots of surprises in sleeves.

and the flagship X1800 XT at 500MHz was completed destroyed by 7800 GTX at 430MHzPrice aside... are you high? Completely destroyed is some rather dramatic verbage there dontcha think?
