There is no doubt that the nVidia 7800GTX 512MB, which everyone expected would launch 2 days ago as a 7800GTX Ultra, would likely win a head-to-head performance test as single or SLI when compared with the single X1800XT or Crossfire. However, ATI clearly believes the competitor for X1800XT is the $499 7800GTX and not the $700 7800GTX 512MB. ATI was quite clear they will be introducing a "PE version" of X1800XT to compete with 7800GTX 512.
I think its just a speculation from Anand's side heh ..
anyway i'll just say what i already said @R3D : if it ever came .. it would have to compete with the G80 :o

Well it's not speculation from AnanTech site.
Maybe a good idea would be to read the article or at least the quote from the article as posted by macatak.

Also quote from the article:
"Those of you who believe ATI is far behind nVidia are in for a surprise."
Better to read whole article, it's quite informative.

ATI has problems shipping X1800XT cards in quantity and now they plan on releasing an even more overclocked PE version. How are they expecting this to work?
Not that the XT PE will save them if released in any decent quantity because the G70 is simply too strong for them.
The best thing ATI currently can do is concentrate themselves on the R580 because the R520 series are already lost but ATI will be able to compete again with nvidia if the R580 is done right.
However, ATI clearly believes the competitor for X1800XT is the $499 7800GTX and not the $700 7800GTX 512MB. ATI was quite clear they will be introducing a "PE version" of X1800XT to compete with 7800GTX 512.
Why would ATI think that? The 7800GTX 256 didn't have a competitor since ATI didn't release anything in time. Since the 7800GTX 512 and the X1800XT 512 are released about the same time with similar type specs, it seems to me, these are the two that should be competing. Anyway, I guess the deal with ATI is that they always want the user to compare a yet to be released product against whatever Nvidia's top card is. How convenient.

ATi's upcoming offerings look good but until they can start hard launching their products, I don't really care. They should drop focus on the R520 and focus on the R580 gpu and RD580 crossfire chipsets to compete next year.

NVIDIA: All action, no talk.
ATI: All talk, no action.
I like NV's policy a lot better. They say *nothing* about up and coming products, they just hit the scene like a hydrogen bomb. ATI yammers and yammers for months and months about their new SUPER NV KILLER, which never materializes. They should just be quiet about it, and hard launch a competitor to GTX512.

7800 GTX256: $499
X1800XT: $599
7800GTX 512: $649
Ok ATI, so your 512MB XT is the "competition" to the 256MB NV offering. Yet the GTX 512 is closer in price to your XT. Makes sense.

No, which is why I think they should switch to NVIDIA's style. ATI sounds like Bitboys Oy.

That is probably exactly what they are doing at this point. Since R520 is fast, but not quite fast enough to take the crown back, the R580 is probably the focus of their efforts now. Guess we'll know what comes of this in a few months or so at least.

...or as they told Anandtech in January.
NVIDIA: All action, no talk.
ATI: All talk, no action.
Yep thats the way its been for the past two generations of cards. Looking at the R420 and R480 we will probably need to wait till the R580 is released before we see a good yield and a good supply of cards.
The R520 is dead before it got going IMO. Hopefully ATI can finish strong with the R580, like the did with the X850XT, but I have my doubts. :(

Well some mod decided that the Anand article is all about rumors, I think that is little offensive to Anand since they run some actual tests and personally i find the article very informative.
I so much believe in that article that i decided to do the following.
I'm a long time ATI Graphic and TV Card user.
After reading all the comments in this forum and also reading few of the reviews I was just about going to switch and buy the GeForce 7800GTX 512MB a great card I must say.
Surely I was not going to pay the Newegg: $749.00, Out of Stock price and since i have to wait anyway I decided to buy after Christmas probably saving at least $100.00, after all Santa is just about around the corner.
Now I'm having second thoughts and not going to buy anything at least till the end of January 06
The reason is today article at AnanTech
"ATI RD580: Dual x16 Crossfire Preview"
http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2609
PS I was also going to buy the Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard but it looks like that some good Crossfire motherboards are coming out (also from the article).
Since I'm just about to built a completely new system i think the best is to wait little longer.
January is not such a long wait so I think that's the best. Any advice on that.
Beside the new GPU and motherboard I'm also buying AMD A64 X2 4200+ 939 or AMD Athlon 64 4000+ (not sure about that one yet).

Seems the PR psuedo-paper launch has worked on one person. Is it possible this talk is to prevent every high-end buyer that has been waiting on the X1800XT Crossfire to come into stock from buying the GTX 512MB and an SLI mobo? Idunno, call me crazy...
It is the "we know you are waiting so you might as well keep waiting because we got whooped" tactic. IMHO, of course.
If you want to go ATI and don't mind waiting, then yeah, I'd defnitely wait for their next card and for some of the Xfire motherboards to be in use to see how things are first. I'd probably go for the card first and wait a while longer for the xfire boards to mature or at least wait long enough to see what kind of growing pains you might have to go through with the xfire boards.

Well i wonder why Anand's only among all other sites have this info if its any true.
in anyway i didnt say its not possible & thats why i added "it would have to compete with the G80" if it ever came out. ATi is well-known for paper lanuches so i wouldnt hold any longer for the said PE even if it was much faster .. & remember Crossfire isnt out yet too so even now my 2x256GTXs are faster than X1800XT .. the 512GTX single/SLI is even more future proof.
hold as long as you want :) .. & happy waiting for you!!

I dont see why you would wait on a brand new tech thats not out in mass yet. Wait at least 2 months for it and then, have to deal with bugs and bs as the product matures.
Instead you can get 1 or 2 256/512 7800gtx's which are available NOW, get a kick ass SLI board which has most of the kinks out and has had time to mature and is proven. Which will give the same or better performance if you go the 512 route.
Seems to me the answer is clear and obvious dude. I dunno call me crazy. :)

Yep, ATI PR has worked on one person so far. The mission was to prevent people from buying GTX512. "Oh, but we've got NV licked with our NEW product, just wait for it". They're basically calling all the people who bought X1800XT's morons. I think the X1800XT is going to have the shortest product life cycle ever.
