View Full Version : We Will Survive
Sorry to hear what happened to you MikeC. You guys will get by. I still cant believe some ppl had to the nerve laugh at the site going down. I hope those ppl realize before they have a website of their own.

You damn skippy we will!! :D
And MikeC, no need to apologize. From what I've heard, these hackers did some significant property damage and I was prepared that re-registering for the forums would be highly likely.
At least we're up and running!
Now, we just have to get back all the other regulars and fill this place up with posts!! :)

Long live nvnews.net!!! :)
I hope you guys catch who ever did this  I cannot believe all the forum data was lost :( I had made it to a TNT tag too :)
Oh well, just glad you are back and I hope they can catch the culprit responsible for messing with one of my favorite websites for video card news, drivers, and info :D
Don't worry about it Mike. You weren't the culprit, the hackers were. Actually I'm more concerned about whether they could have retrieved any passwords when they broke into the servers, or if they were sufficiently well encrypted/protected they couldn't get to it.
Lets just say I have accounts on many boxes, and some I've had administrator accounts on. Thing is however remembering too, too many passwords is almost a forget it, especially when one makes good passwords that contain a combination of
1. Upper case letters
2. Lower case letters
3. Numbers
4. Special characters
5. Sufficiently long enough
6. Nothing someone could easily get by throwing the dictionary at the computer or researching publically known details of one's life (aka don't use your dog's name, kid's name, or any personal information that could be quickly and easily discovered if a hacker decides to probe into one's life)
If the passwords were for instance stored in the database in plain text or easy enough to recover, time to change my password on more boxes then I can even remember off the top of my head now.
Mike are those script children cought yet?
They should be @$$ rapid in prision (yes my spelling was like that on purpose). Those children should not be allowed near anything electrical.

<sigh> 18 months and 2600 posts, all gone. Guess that puts all of us back on the same playing field. I'm looking forward to starting out all over again. We'll be back stronger than ever now. Nobody, but nobody screws with nV and Envy News!
So, when will I get my moderator-ship back? ;)
Cool! Saturn is back. Hello dude. I lost over 1k posts (1225 is more exact)

Glad that NVNEWS is BACK, esepcially the forums :)
Can anyone think of anybody who was recently banned or would have a reason to hack nV News? I'd like to fry his chips.

No, no one has been recently banned, at least to my knowledge.
I personally don't think it someone we pissed off, or an evil rival site, it was just random stupidity from some 13yr old reading how to hack a hole in one of the tools we use at the site...

it's just great to see nV News taking the steps towards full recovery  hopefully this won't ever happen again
I am very surprised there weren't regular local backups made for the site and forums, but I am still glad it's finally back. In the meantime, I discovered many other great forums with more of the content I am looking for. I also tripped upon many... lesser... forums (*cough* Rage3d). Beyond3D looks like a great place with very intelligent people and much meaningful discussion related to 3D hardware. The Pro/Forums at ProCooling.com (http://www.procooling.com) also can satisfy my cooling needs a little better than this place. nForcers HQ (http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/) has my mobo fix. Of course, I will always return here when I want to discuss drivers or games.

I visited Beyond3D (VERY good content) and just trolled (is that a word???), and also 3DGPU's Forum, I actually registered there, but never posted, just read around there as well.
Having a high traffic site (as I assume nvnews is) running vulnerable web server is just asking really, especially as crackers probably already have huge subnet scanners looking for vulnerable versions.
Seriously though, after the first defacement the box should have been taken down and examined, the exploit patched before putting it up again. That was just asking for it almost... keeping up to date with the latest security developments is a must when you run a popular website. The ironic thing is I emailed MikeC about the server still being vulnerable and then an hour later nvnews suddenly disappears.. oh well

Welcome to the party! We're just getting started!! :D :p
And R1CH, from what I understand, the holes were huge and I don't think MikeC and Joerg had enough time to implement the fixes for them in a timely fashion after the initial defacement. Stuff like that takes a lot of prep and the initial attack left everyone's wheels spinning. When you're caught off guard, sometimes rational thought doesn't get through.
I can't stand hackers, never could man, this was a massive community not that I posted much but I did visit often :)
The girls who defaced the site were not hackers just idiot kids who are hacker wannabes but can't make it as hackers so they deface sites and then get told off by their parents. Hopefully the FBI catches up to them soon.

hell yeah!:D
well the 'bad guy' used the security hole found in php prior to version 4.2.2 and did some harm on the server. i was on vacation during that time (1 week only) ... and the worst part of it all was.. that rackshack (the hoster) really behaved like a bunch of a**holes. we didn't have the slightest chance to get our data etc back.. or even try to recover properly etc.. they simply shut down the server.. and said.. either we/they do a complete format & re-install.. orrr we/mike etc.. gotta start looking for a new host.. period. :\
I think the term bad guy is too nice for them:mad: I've heard people saying some bad things about rackshack before, guess this proves what they were saying
