This is so confusing, 6800Gs vs 6800GT.
With all the reviews going on the net it gets more and more inflexible to choose one.
The GT has 16 pipes vs 12 on the GS but the GS has higher clock speed and can be overclocked to insane speed.
Any Ideas?
I can't see why someone would spend the extra money on the GT when you can get a better performing GS (thinking about one of the OC XFX GS cards) for less. And with the expectation that an AGP version of the card will be out in a few weeks, there's really no reason IMNHO to get a GT now. As a matter of fact, I thought I read something that stated nvidia was going to discontinue all 6800's except the GS. hmm..
The 6800GS is DEFINATELY the better buy. For starters, it's performance is equal to that of GT. It is usually behind by a frame or two, sometimes it's even better, but at $70 cheaper, that's a steal! This thing also overclocks like woah and with even a slight overclock it'll be able to kill the 6800GT (You can buy factory OC'd 6800GS's that will dominate the GT), it also uses less power.
LanceX is right too, the entire 6800 line has been discontinued except for the 6800GS and 6800XT. Definately go with the 6800GS.
on higher resolutions?
maybe the GT is better than the GS?

Go with GS. There is no difference in performance between the two, and you save a lot of money.

What if the GT and the GS are the same price where I'm going to get it from.
The GT is only 20 $ more than the GS.
Well if they are the same price I would base it on what resolution you will most likely be gaming at. Like Zeero said, when both at stock the 6800GT does take a bit of a lead over the GS at high (1600x1200 and up) resolutions. Though if you are going to be gaming on med/low (1280x1024 and lower) I would highly suggest the 6800GS, as it performs similarly if not better, and can be overclocked very easily to rape to the 6800GT.

I use med res all the time, but mix it with AA and AF.

In your case 6800GT.

Even if you buy the GS, you can still activate the 16 pipelines through flashing, but you better be sure of what you're doing...

Never heard of it before on the 6800GS!
Are you sure ?

The idea that you can overclock a 6800GS to smoke a 6800GT is not relevant. Making a statement like that makes it sound as if you couldn't overclock a 6800GT. Most of the 6800GT's I have seen would overclock to around 6800 Ultra settings. So the best bet is to compare apples to apples here. 6800GS v/s 6800GT at stock = 6800GT winner, 6800GS overclocked v/s 6800GT overclocked = 6800GT winner. Any questions?
Funny from sites i have seen the 6800GS is the same price as the 6800GT.
I'd say about equal. The o/c GS will beat a GT but will it match the performance of an o/c GT? Thats irrelevant because you're not sure what level either card will clock to. You can only compare the baseline speeds. If I were to buy a new card in this price range it would be the GS as they are aprox $50 cheaper. The GS also has the supposed fixes to the 6 series such as the purevideo issue. The only downside is that you will have to use a PCIE system for the GS. There is a rumor that an AGP GS will be released possibly built on crippled NV40 cores. That means a possibility in unlocking extra pipes. Currently, the GS is new silicon and has no extra pipes to unlock.

The benchmarks I've read shows 6800GS to be sligthly faster. And it seems to be very overclockable and able to reach 6800U or better performance.

Then you've seen funny benches. At 1600x1200 the GT is always faster. Also OCing a GT yeilds more performence [16x12 pipes]. My GT did 425/1150 for gaming, no GS can touch that.
