ATI Technologies is currently in the final stage of testing its R580 graphics processor units (GPUs) with customers, sources at Taiwan graphics card makers indicated, adding that the graphics chip vendor expects to launch the flagship chip in early 2006.
any bets on when they would actually be available ?

I want to give them the benefit of the doubt, just this once.
ati's partners must be really pissed that they are releasing a new gpu so close to each other....

I'd think they'd be more pissed that ATI can't seem to get them anything besides PAPER.

typical ATi,PR move.its always the-we are gonna have a killer,crusher,bummer,etc... upcoming product-that we hope would cover our asses for now.this way they are trying to win hearts and minds.I remember a guy that is not an uninformed end user (apparently) who tried to help his favorite company with clearing its extensive inventory of R4xx GPUs by buying the outdated GTO card and he was jumping with joy that he could unlock more pipes, thinking he had scored a major winner.I'd say its better if all ATi favoring people unite and buy out all the excessive outdated R4xx inventory at once, after all they can unlock pipes isnt that great?who needs SM3.0/HDR/DualGPUrendering. ;)
I wonder why you dont see any Taiwanese leaking sources talk about nVIDIA produtcs two cycles ahead of us.that is what I love about nVIDIA,more action less talk.who is leaking the info and putting the words in Taiwanese Partners mouths. wouldnt take a rocket scientist to figure that out.
I say we have to call the company the "A to be available I" until further notice, and slap the ATBAi logo instead of ATi there on the boxez.
here's hoping that ATBAi get their act together and hard launch GRAPHIC CARDS instead of papers for the sake of competition.this is not space shuttle industry.we need moe than one final product,we need'em designed in a way that allows them be churned out in masses,no prototypes please.
EDIT:What I've posted may look like "kick a guy while he's down",but infact I was trying to slap some wake up call into their face.

This is really a slap in the face to the folks that ponied up $600 for the R520 in the last few weeks. I have a feeling that is why the X1800XT isnt selling so well (that and the fact that its not in stock anywhere). I bought one and sold it for a GTX 512MB - didnt feel like owning an outdated card in a month. Not fair to expect people to shell out $1200 in a few months - boycott the R520!! :D

I think they aren't on shelves because they don't exist outside of a spec sheet.

The 1800XT are out there just not in large quantities and if I was going to buy a ATI card then I would wait until next year or until the 580 comes out because the people who buys a 1800XT will be dissappointed when ATI updates there card and your stuck with the X1800XT.

Very true! Also Ati should just launch their products on the back of milk cartons and save everyone the time and stress trying to find them on store shelves:D

meh, I am looking forward to this. Cost less than nVidia, who knows, maybe similar performance. I hope those new crossfire boards will be available when these new gpus hit the market. It looks like an interesting alternative to SLI:thumbsup:

Well, there aren't any Xfire Master X1800XT cards yet, so I doubt that there will be any for the R580 upon its launch. I'm just hoping that this isn't another paper launch.

I think it was the latest issue of CPU Magazine that had the article, but they said that the Crossfire boards were buggy as hell and the system wasn't running until putzing for a number of hours and even when it was running, it was anything but stable.

who knows, Anandtech (http://anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2609) seems to have had a good time with it. I'm still pretty excited:thumbsup:

If ATI were to be a religion it could have gathered alot of loyal believers I say.
Apparently it can surprise lots of people with one time seen, one time performed miracle;verification pending;and continuous promise of upcoming final victory with no actual material evidence.hmm the irony.

The awesomeness of that analogy escapes my ability to praise it. If it was shorter I'd sig it.

I was thinking the same thing, when is the last time a good! ATI chipset board has been released, a lot of the major vendor won't even consider supporting them, so even if they manage to pull a master xfire card from between their cheeks where are you going to put it?

Yeah, exactly...but the same article, I believe, also said that the xfire cards will work in any dual-PCI x16 slot board. And I don't recall if the board even has to support the cards.
So basically, any SLI board will work, you just won't have ATI's crappy chipset involved, so it may actually be stable. :p
But I think something needs to be done to the cards via the drivers in order for that to work.

The system I'm using now uses the Radeon XPress 200, and I will admit that it's a darn fine chipset. Perhaps they could bring some of the developers of their chipset software over to the graphics side and help them out a little.

Say it ain't so, Sat...say it ain't so!
And that issue was the November issue, which I got in mid-October and was probably written in August or early September, so I'm positive that in the time the board they used was tested and you got yours, revisions were made by ATI.
Hell, they'd be stupid if they didn't make revisions because when I read that (p)review of the xfire board...I just laughed and laughed.
I don't care for ATI one bit, but I don't want them to sputter out and die. We need competition and I need someone to rip on all the time. It's just so easy.

Yeah, I know. But honestly, I've had less trouble with this system than I've had with any of my nForce machines from a software standpoint. And I've owned nForce2, 3 and 4 machines. This board (MSI RS480M2-IL) gets along wonderfully with NVIDIA graphics cards. I'm really happy with it.
