View Full Version : Who runs Winxp Pro 64 bit Edition?
How do you like it and what has been your experience?, is it faster than the 32 bit version and have you been able to find 64 bit drivers for all your equipment? Do you have any complaints?
I will be putting together my rig soon once my MB arrives and so those who have experience and are willing to share it is greatly appreciated, thanks.(xmasmile)

I use it but I don't recommend it. To many hassles. Stupid games that won't run (starforce copy protection) at all and others that need tweaking/messing with to install (Doom3 ROE).
It's no faster than XP32.

I use it, I find it faster running apps, but the more important thing is the fps in games, in winXP x32 the framerate fluctuates a lot, in winXP x64 the framerate is more stable in all the games. But I donīt recommend it, you need to do a lot of research to see if all your hardware is compatible and all the apps you use, and there are other problems like the starforce protection of some games, like SC:CT and msi edit to install Vampire Bloodlines and Doom3ROE as riptide said (xmasmile)

Yeah and in some cases I've noticed it's even slower!
Yes, in some cases it is little slower, but in some cases its faster also. So it evens out.

I like it, but if you want to not worry about apps or hardware being compatible then just use 32-bit. That's why I didn't put it on my gf's comp yet. I've found a few things that won't run and even a few network cards that had drivers for every OS since it was created that don't have 64-bit drivers. 3com 3C905-TX 10/100 for example has worked since win95 (made in '96) and linux kernels have supported it since then.
I love it. RAM and virtual memory management seems way better. Alt-tabbing out of games is lighting compared to 32 bit XP. It does take a little work to get your hardware setup correctly but isn't that the fun of computers for geeks like us?

You are correct, sir.

Took the plunge a couple of weeks ago when I switched to a PCIe setup...honestly, I'm kind of liking it. Still holding out for a nice 64-bit-build image viewer and media player, but apart from that it's behaving itself nicely.
If you want to run a 64bit OS Linux is the best, its had 64bit support the longest and has all the bugs worked out. Im running Gentoo 2005.1 x86_64 and it runs great.

What games do you play on it? CoD2? NFS:MW? BF2? BIA? SH3? Any major titles besides Doom3 or Quake4? Do you have SLI? If so, how's the SLI support?

I play the first 3 regularly on XP64. No SLI.
Its a very good OS been running it since the final beta, running final now.

I dont have SLI, and thats mainly because I dont need it(7800 GT works fine for me) and well college. Latest gen games I play are Quake4, Doom3, and Half-Life2. Im waiting for the holidays to get some new games. BF2 looks interesting and yes it does work with cedega, I liked the original CoD but ive heard mixed reviews of it. The game that looks the most interesting right now is Prince of Persia. Anyway you probably believe like most that there are no games on Linux but this is not true at all. There are many and most games work great.

has all the bugs worked out because there isn't much to it. (mikec)

Heh. Isn't much to it? Tell that to the 181 gnome-related packages I compiled :)

I know many games work on Linux. But somehow I just don't see how emulating the DirectX API on another OS could be "best" for gaming. Take emulating a Playstation One game on PC for example. Lots of the games work, but just as many of them do not.
