Here's what's new in Firefox 1.5:

Automated update to streamline product upgrades. Notification of an update is more prominent, and updates to Firefox may now be half a megabyte or smaller. Updating extensions has also improved.
Faster browser navigation with improvements to back and forward button performance.
Drag and drop reordering for browser tabs.
Improvements to popup blocking.
Clear Private Data feature provides an easy way to quickly remove personal data through a menu item or keyboard shortcut.
Answers.com is added to the search engine list.
Improvements to product usability including descriptive error pages, redesigned options menu, RSS discovery, and "Safe Mode" experience.
Better accessibility including support for DHTML accessibility and assistive technologies such as the Window-Eyes 5.5 beta screen reader for Microsoft Windows. Screen readers read aloud all available information in applications and documents or show the information on a Braille display, enabling blind and visually impaired users to use equivalent software functionality as their sighted peers.
Report a broken Web site wizard to report Web sites that are not working in Firefox.
Better support for Mac OS X (10.2 and greater) including profile migration from Safari and Mac Internet Explorer.
New support for Web Standards including SVG, CSS 2 and CSS 3, and JavaScript 1.6.
Many security enhancements.

So this is twice now that we have Firefox 1.5 final thread but it still isn't released? Won't those of us with RC1 or greater get auto-updates anyway?

It'll take a couple of days or so till auto-updates get available.

A "final out" thread and it's a RC. Says so right in the original post in the notes. Had me going I even started downloading it and then cancelled once I read the rest of the thread. Weeeee...
the final is already available on their ftp, the release notes are not updated yet.

Well i downloaded from this link on the ftp and installed it . I looked into the "about mozilla firefox " in help tab and it says this :

So i am pretty sure it is the final version . Haven't noticed any problems with it uptil now too.

Installation went flawlessly, my extensions are still working fine, only had some trouble with the realmedia plugin, but i fixed this. Overall nice improvements (esp. auto-update) and a step in the right direction.

Most of my extensions still worked (or upgraded automatically). I'm pleased with it so far. There's some groovy new 1.5 extensions, too, like foXpose (https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=1457), which we Mac OS X geeks will appreciate!

Is anyone having issues, on this forum, with 1.5 not loading images in posts on the first load? I have to refresh the page to get some images in posts to display. It makes for some interesting posts, I can tell ya that.

Hmm weird... I haven't seen that yet... Try to uninstall Firefox completely, then reinstall 1.5.

If it happens again, I'll probably do that. I've done zilch to troubleshoot.

Ok, problem two: Windows media files are doing what they used to do with older firefox builds. Videos, when clicked, come up with gibberish text. Audio can't find the right codec.

I've been digging in the options to change how Firefox handles file extensions, but you can't add them, you can only configure the ones it recognizes. Know where I can dig this setting up or fix the issue?

easy exploit found

http://packetstormsecurity.org/0512-exploits/firefox-1.5-buffer-overflow.txt
<!-- Firefox 1.5 buffer overflow

Basically firefox logs all kinda of URL data in it's history.dat file,
this little script will set a really large topic and Firefox will then
save that topic into it's history.dat.. The next time that firefox is
opened, it will instantly crash due to a buffer overflow -- this will
happen everytime until you manually delete the history.dat file -- which
most users won't figure out.

this proof of concept will only prevent someone from reopening
their browser after being exploited. DoS if you will. however, code
execution is possible with some modifcations.

Tested with Firefox 1.5 on Windows XP SP2.
