CHIP Online had the opportunity to test a beta version of ATI’s still secret „Avivo XCode“ encoding tool.
It uses the power of the GPU to reduce video encoding time –into virtually any format – drastically.
Our results show: The new ATI solution easily does it 5 times faster than even the fastest CPUs available today!
Traditional video encoding tools rely solely on the PC’s main processor for the extensive calculations necessary when en- and decoding video sequences. The secret ATI Avivo XCode tool, however, additionally employs the power of ATI’s X1000 series’ architecture. We assume that the XCode tool mainly utilizes the programmable pixel shader units for it’s number-crunching.
Only new ATI graphics cards need apply
There’s a hook however: Avivo XCode only runs on PCs with ATIs Radeon X1000 series VGA cards; i.e. X1300, X1600, X1800 in their respective Pro or XT versions, as well as their All-in-Wonder version.
Our tests indicate that even the cheapest model, a Radeon X1300 available for around 90 Euros in Europe, can achieve dramatic speed increases at crunching down videos.

Sweet. Now, if only you could find one in stores...

Why be negative and sarcastic about it.
It's not a ATI paper launch, it's more or less rumor on I believe soon to come technology and I'm quite excited about IT.
If this was about nVidia most people here would also be excited :).
For me it doesn't matter where it comes from.
Well since I'm from Toronto probably I'm just a little more happy for the ATI :)

It's just my nature.

It's technology on a paper-launched card.

Look at the address of the site.

Me either, but it still has to BE here in order to be used.

Do you get a hooker (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=60798) with every ATI card purchased?

Although to be fair that thread probably belongs here since it is a rumor.
It would be cool if this were true, but I'm not believing anything coming out of ATI at the moment regarding "future technologies". I'll wait and see before I get excited.

It's readily available in the UK.
The cards are, but unless I'm mistaken the software for doing this encoding isn't. With the way things have been going lately nVidia will probably release software before ATI that does the same thing on all 6xxx series cards and higher but that they just haven't announced yet.(xmasgrin)
seriously, this shouldnt be more than a program/driver update really. the bandwidth of PCIe allows for large amounts of data in both directions. i remember reading that this was supposed to be a HUGE benefit from PCIe. you can send data and receive data just as fast to allow the GPU to do work as well.
however, the GPU still needs to have the instructions to carry out such tasks. idk anything about that. so if the 6/7 series does have it, expect the same thing. if it doesnt, congrats to ATI.

I think it's mainly your nature when it's about ATI, certainly it would not be easy going through life being negative about everything.
All the x1000 cards where the technology might be used on are in stores at least in North America and Europe.
For sure they are more available then 7800 GTX 520MB and I would not call it paper launch.
Yes i know this is nVidia forum and most people here might have preferences for the nVidia cards but I also believe most people here are smart enough to welcome any new technology no matter where it comes from, same like I do.
5x faster movie encoding than even the fastest CPUs available today (if true) is sure something to get excited about and sooner or later everybody would benefit from that. Also exciting is that even the budget ATI X1300 now at about $100.- will benefit from that technology.
Relatively few people are ready to spend $600.-, $750.- or $1500.- USD on video cards.
Also since it's reported on other sites and some test were done it's probably little more than just a rumor.
Your reference about hookers, ATI and Canada is completely off subject, very offensive and it certainly doesn't belong in this forum.
So since it doesn't belong here I should not discus it any further and you should edit your post so I can edit this.
Thank you.

Funny. I don't know you, nor do you know how I am in real life.

But how long has it been since the X1000 cards have been launched? 2 months? I would hope they'd be more widely available than a card that sold out on the day it was launched (because you could buy it then instead of having to wait a month after the "launch" to get it)

Once again: I. HAVE. NOTHING. AGAINST. NEW. TECHNOLOGY. I could gush on and on about quad-core CPUs and how they're going to revolutionize the computing market, but until I can put one in my machine...it's all talk.

Umm...okay? Hookers are offensive how? It's not like I called you or your mother a hooker. You said the cards were available in Toronto, which is in Canada. There was another thread, in this forum, about an abundance of hookers in Canada--which is in Canada. Therefore, I tried to bring a little humor to the thread, but it was obviously a wasted effort and was completely lost on you.

I certainly understood that you were saying that your mother was a hooker.

On topic, don't TV hardware encoders already encode video at around 5 times the rate of a CPU?

(cheers) ATI equal reinventing the wheel like usual.

Great! I've been waiting for the mid-range X1600...wait, they don't have it listed on NewEgg...nor anywhere else. Hmmm. This is exactly why I'm skeptical of this news. A card that was announced two months ago but not yet available. They can say all they want about upcoming releases but their recent history does not incline me to believe them. I really do want this to be true because video encoding is a PITA right now when it takes over an hour to encode video for DVD, but I'm not getting my hopes up just yet.
True, the 512 7800 is not easy to find either, but then that's due in part to its popularity. Most people who are going to spend $600 on an XT are going to prefer to spend $700 on a 512 7800 and have the fastest card on the market. Money is clearly no object for these people (lucky bastards(xmastong) ).

Nope, try more like real time which is more than twice as slow as my CPU or ten times as slow as ATI's claims. But what do you expect from a PCI card?
