Nvidia 6800GS AGP arrives next week

I buy a 680GT if the prices weren't over $300.00. I saw the 6800GT OC 256 for $364.00. To me for something thats old now the price to far off.


The cheapest 6800GT I can find is 284.00US.
I can get a used for 200 bucks. But if NV releases a GS in AGP it's
going to kick the crap out of the GT in performance if it overclocks well.

Actually, if you want a bang for the buck performance part- go SLi on s754. I'm even considering it.

Actually, compare how much money the hardware for a 939 SLi rig would cost to a s754 SLi rig and the SLi will be cheaper. Also, I'm already running an A64 3700, not MUCH on the s939 front that can burry that. That's why I'm considering Epox's s754 SLi board. Pair dual GS, 7800GTs, or even GTXs with this 3700 of mine and it'd be a screamin' rig.

s754 Athlons are Single Channel Memory Controllers. s939 are Dual channel memory controllers.

The current el-cheapo Venice core A64 939 chip 3200+ (2GHz) is by design an FX-51 but at 2.0 Ghz instead of 2.2. The added benefit to the s939 chips is the fact that it also support SSE3 extensions. Although I am not sure how important that is at the moment.

That chip is well under $150 now and a decent brand nForce4 board is under $100.

Not sure about burrying anything but I imagine a new A64 3500+ is faster than your s754 3700+.

My STOCK 3200+ gets 914 on 3DM03 and 4987 on 3DM05.

I wouldn't buy this 1yearold card. How about a new chip that is more efficient and saving power? I mean something like an optimized 90nm chip + a linux driver with cool'n'quiet-Feature for that 95 percent idle time when more than 50MHz are just a waste of energy.

No, unfortunatley I don't. I'll do some benching as soon as I get the spare time. But, from what I've read the s754 3700 is as fast or faster than the s939 3500. Add the OC you can reach the performance of a 4000.

The Athlon 64 3700+ is based on the same core as the Athlon FX-53, except it does not feature the dual memory channel architecture.

Excuse me, but that is just nuts.

First of all, you post and link to theinquirer (no less) with such certainty and trust, that few non-naive people even devote to mainstream media like cnn or bbc.

Do you have any doubts? The good old NV40 chip was made by IBM at Fishkill (New York) using 130nm.. IBM is moving away from manufacturing so unlikely they would take more orders(all AGP: 6800, 6800GT and 6800U are all the same die that was made by IBM). The chip used for PCIE 6800 is totally different and a separate die, made by TSMC 110nm, and hence the reason you hear all the PCIE people getting such good overclocks with their 6800's (6800GT and 6800U PCIE are a third die, which ironically, is still 130nm, even though the parts require higher clock).

The announcement of the 6800GS PCIE was very natural, because as I mentioned earlier, most people were getting very good overclocks (440.. even 460Mhz) thanks to the finer manufacturing process, which also allowed to do this without voltage increase and producing relatively little extra heat.

If nVidia does force a 6800GS AGP on the market, we can be sure that it will be small production (not many NV40 chips left), and like 6800GT and 6800U, will require higher voltage than the original 6800 AGP.

And ofcourse whatever benefits the 6800GS gained by using the 7800GT/GTX PCB, will be lost, because that is a PCIE PCB, and nobody is going to go out of their way to design a custom PCB for a few AGP consumers.

i'm also a skeptic, like you said several things point to it not happening, #1 to me is that it's based on the 7800 GT PCB, which means that the "good old NV40" will not be as overclockable, and it will pretty much be just a hybrid between a 6800 and a 6800 GT, which it is anyway, but i think it'll lose it's overclockability if bridged down, and also, if it is the true nv40, it will have a hard time running at those clocks all the time, very few real nv40 chips can do 425mhz with great cooling (my card being one, i max at 420) and another point is that the 6800 GS is a total new chip in itself, the NV42 which is based on the NV41 (the native PCI nv40) so that right there kills the hopes of the "true" 6800 GS coming to AGP without a port, so the inquire must have reported it wrong, it's more like a 2nd wave of overclocked 6800's with new memory, i highly doubt it'll retain it's overclocking properties and it won't be just like the pci-express card when it does come out, if it comes out, basically it won't be a true 6800 GS either way you put it, and more than likeily it won't be using the 7800 GT pcb also, good luck with it if they come out though, not trying to rain on your parade, i'm just a skeptic

I talked to Fudo this morning and he seems to think it is coming soon.
But I'm leaning toward it being a bridged NV41 myself. I think this is why it's running a little behind.
Don't forget XFX jumped the gun and had it listed then had to pull it right quick. So we know it is coming.
I would love to just see a 7800GS that we could unlock pipes on. "hint hint Nvidia" ;) (cheers)
