Quake3 changes graphics to medium settings whenever game's reloaded

hey ever since the last 3 nvidia drivers releases (included the newest ones from Dec. 9th), my Quake 3 graphics settings will always change themselves to "medium" settings. So I go to change the settings to "high", but whenever I exit and reload quake 3, graphics automatically change themselves back to "medium". I never set any game profiles, what happening???

XP Home using 81.95 drivers on a Leadtek 6600GT

I had the same problem. Solved by editing the q3config.cfg file in notepad then setting it to be read-only.
