big blow to ATI (mikec)

Indeed, it is a big blow (http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=28333) to ATI, they was keen to buy ULI but Nvidia got it before they did. Here bit more news about it from The Register (http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2005/12/14/nvidia_buys_uli/) that Nvidia is going to expand the chipset market into lowest end to compete with Intel.

nVidia needed something to compete at the lowest end with Intel, since as of now Intel is shipping millions of low-end Intel boards (http://ir.ati.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=105421&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=795165&highlight=) which are using the ATi Radeon Xpress chipset.

I wonder if Nvidia will relabel Uli's new chipset for the M2 socket as their own. Since I have not herd any detail about Nvidia's original chipset. Maybe Nvidia had run into some problems, and need a quick fix, so they bought Uli.

I was thinking about buying a uli new chipset for a 6600gt agp card system setup in a pvr.

Urm don't you need a licence to build Intel chipsets? Not that it has stopped VIA but Intel has strong armed them quite a few times.

Maybe, but it only seems like it would be an issue if they were using Intel chipsets without Intel's permission.

But if I were to make up a chipset that took LGA775 CPUs, but built the chipset from the ground up, I don't think Intel could do a damn thing about it because I'm not infringing on anything they've created.

But I could be completely wrong.

Then 1697 will be the last product from ULI(snowman)

well it will be the last product with the ULi label. im sure nvidia will continue to have them crank out chipsets and drivers, however they will just carry the nvidia label.

what a pick-up, what a great business move. *impressed*

Nvidia just knows when to buy a company and get the help they need. I am serious. Nvidia used 3dfx's sli to eventually make a better one. Now they increased their stability on the chipset side. Wow, I say congrats. And for the price (50 some odd million), that sounds like a steal.

if nvidia does things right they could use the money they make from their motherboard chipsets to fund the whole R&D and production for their video cards. lol Via has to really be hurting after this deal, they still have yet to produce NF4 killer. Via could always say they were faster than ULI but not anymore.

I buy the Voodoo 5. In less than a week Nvidia buys them out.

I buy the Asrock Dual. In less than a month Nvidia buys them out.

I just hope that I don't get future support yanked out from under me like I did with the 3dfx card.

Yes this is a big blow. We are going to have a online chat with them about this and other things coming up to try to learn more about their plans. Are you discussing this on the site you're associated with? I realize that this site is far more popular and active than yours but it just seems odd that you wouldn't be chatting it up over there or at NVIDIA's forum.

Next time I want you to really rub it in, Clay. (xmasgrin)

I'm not rubbing it in, it's a simple fact. The forums there have more tumbleweeds than members or activity. His coming here (with only one other person even noticing him) to ask for a link to his chat is peculiar at best.

Scott you have given my staff and myself many reasons not to like you. Your actions in the past and emails along with the threads you have started today at other sites about nVnews shows your real intentions. Just because I own an NVIDIA fansite doesn't mean I have to put up with NVIDIA PR's mouthpieces. Tell NVIDIA PR we will post a link to the chat on our front page. No use to torture us by inflicting you on us for days.
