This is exactly what intel did with its dual core chips.
I don't think we want to be encouraging people to follow in Intel's footsteps on that particular issue.:)

I would guess that it's just officially supported SLI-on-a-single card a la the Asus 7800 GT card. IIRC that configuration wasn't officially supported by nVidia, although I might not remember correctly.

As for ATi, the next generation R600 is slated for launch end of this year according to the roadmap we have seen and the process technology is 65nm.
Will R600 be made on an Intel fab? :D I doubt TSMC can master 65nm process within a few months, I mean they can on Lab but I don't think they'll have the capacity to do it for mass production in such a few time.

Since when did Vr-zone start to get inside info? That info is too good to be true. Is vr-zone the new Inquirer or in other words what is vr-zone's credibility history?
Lately VR-Zone has been posting alot more rumours than Inquirer indeed.

Yes they are, but what they mean by dual core is 2 gpu's on one die. Think about it, isnt it easier slapping 2 geforce 6 gpu's onto 1 die then making a brand new 32 pipe gpu?
This is exactly what intel did with its dual core chips.

Btw the april timeframe has to be wrong, either its for the g71 or the tapeout of the g80.
The problem is GPU's need a truck load more bandwith than CPU's. I honestly can't see them going this route.

^^^^ Thanks for the info, thats interesting and where did you find that one if I may ask? By the end of March Nvidia will replace all their cards to the 7 series/90nm if that info is true. Nice.

One thing I don't understand is why the 512mb GTX's are still 749 on newegg. Even after ATI priced the faster X1900XTX under it.

I thought the price of the GTX would drop but it doesn't seem to be budging.

high price = low supply + high demand

Of course I could be wrong. ;)

Heh, I know that. It just sucks how consumers get taken advantage of sometimes. Of course there's always the option of just not buying it.:p

I agree with you. I think the GTX512 (G70 Ultra) actually is nothing more than an extremely good G70 GTX core. The best of the best. Maybe they get only 5 of these per waffer, but most end up regular GT and GTX cores (both products have very fair prices).

This card (GTX512) was only intented to get good press, and cut the time until the 7900GTX/G71 becomes available, but never for true mass production. Since it looks like Nvidia wants to move most/all their cards to 90nm as soon as possible, they won´t increase the G70 production only to get more G70 GTX512 cores either.

In a perfect world Nvidia could force the retailers not to go above MSRP, but thats capitalism I guess. :)

MSRP is an odd thing. Technically the retailer is not allowed to sell anything below MSRP and the manufacturer could force them not too. They are allowed to sell it at any price above MSRP though. It's most likely not the retailers reaping the rewards of the high prices anyway. The retailers are paying too much for them too, maybe even the distrubutors are too. The only way to get good low prices is to buy bulk. With a product like the GTX512, it is impossible to buy it in bulk.

In Australia that is illegal. It's called "Price Fixing". You are right about the high prices of the GTX512. My wholesale price of a GTX512 is 40% higher than a GTX256 ! So it's either the distributor or the manufacturer making a killing on them. :thumbdwn:

Woot! those on a G80 would be sweet, not likely to happen though.

actually June is a very nice timeframe for a new vid card. NVIDIA Marketing will say smthing like "Be prepared with a fully compliant DX10 card by the time Vista is out". As Vista will likely be pushed towards November, we'll see slightly improved G80 hitting the market by then with NVIDIA Marketing saying "Crush the competition with the best vid card ever". Now, why wait till November and sell just one line-up of cards, when you can sell two and double the profit? :)

X-bit labs - Hardware news - Nvidia’s First DirectX 10 Chip to Be “Hybrid” Design.

Nvidia’s code-named G80 graphics processing unit (GPU) will incorporate 48 pixel shader processors and an unknown number of vertex shader processors, some unofficial sources said. The chip is still expected to support feature-set of DirectX 10 along with Shader Model 4.0, even though it will not take advantage of the unified processors that can compute both pixel and vertex shaders.

There is no way I would grab a G71 with the G80 coming in 6 to 8 months.
It's sounding more and more like the G71 is just a speed bumped G70.
Nvidia is just now going to 9nm so the G71 is just a hold over card till
the G80 comes out. Nvidia is getting there feet wet with 9nm so the
G80 should be on time and clock well. ;)
Just my 2 cents. :)
