6600gt Agp Vs Fx5900 Ultra Agp

Hey guys,

What would be the better card? A XFX 6600GT 128MB or a PNY FX5900 256MB ULTRA? Both AGP cards. I'm debating on which one to buy. I play Half Life 2 and CS:Source.

Since some people are getting 16 pipes out of the box I almost wonder if Apollo is getting nVidia's reject cores and just slapping them onto boards. haha it acualy seems like that everyone seems to be getting something different, its like a suprise :-p

To be perfectly honest, if you're playing those games, you're best bet would be an ATI card. An X700 Pro is in the same price range as the 6600GT, or spend a tad more for the X800GTO AGP.

I've been all about nVidia lately, but you just have to be realistic. Get the best bang for the buck in your pricerange for the games that you want to play.

acauly the 6600GT out performs the x700 in hl, and it rivals the x800gto, i would just stick with the 6600gT

Not true. Let's take the closest benchmarks we can. In this test:

We'll use the X800 Pro (which is on par with the X800GTO) versus the 6600GT.

Half-Life 2 1024x768:
X800 Pro - 76.3
6600GT - 73.2

1280x1024:
X800Pro - 74.2
6600GT - 61.1

1024x768 4xAA 8xAF:
X800Pro - 75.1
600GT - 56.5

1280x1024 4xAA 8xAF:
X800Pro - 63.9
6600GT - 31.4

1600x1200 4xAA 8xAF:
X800Pro - 53.5
6600GT - 18.4

The 6600GT is nowhere near the X800GTO in Half-Life 2. If you only play these games, get an ATI card.

Get the 6600GT.....because one day, you might actually want to play something other than HL2 and CS:S. I know it sounds crazy, but for the price of that 6800 with the Ultra Cooler, you could probably find a 6800GT on eBay. You might have to spend a couple more dollars, but the 6800GT would blow you away.

FYI: When I had my 6600GT, I ran the stress test on CS:S at 1280x1024 with high settings (no AA and maybe 8xAF) and I believe I pulled around 90+fps. That was with a P4 2.8. the 6600Gt would serve you quite well for those games.

No AA/AF puts the X800GTO slightly ahead of the 6600Gt. Add AA/AF, and the 6600GT falls way behind.

I dont really notice a difference with AA/AF i know im gona get flamed for this but imo its not a big difference... especaily in close quarter rooms, and the best engine out right now (doom 3) runs MUCH beter on nvidia cards so i would go nvidia anyway even if i was just playing stuff based on the source engine...

if u play hl2, get an nvidia card, or else u cant see the hdr lighting in some maps....unless u get an x1800....which u arent getting lol

You won't get flamed, not from me :) I agree that AA makes a small, but appreciable difference. The difference gets smaller and smaller the higher up you go in resolution.

However, for me anyway, AF makes a huge difference :) I'll play without AA before I continue dropping below 8x AF.

Actually, I would have to disagree here. It doesn't matter how good the Doom 3 engine is, if you ONLY play Source engine games, you should get the card that runs the Source engine best. Honestly, how does the Doom3 engine factor in if you're ONLY playing games that don't run it? E-penis size?

My point stands. The original poster said that he mainly plays CS:S and HL2. If that is the case, then the X800GTO is a far better buy in his price range than a 6600GT. If his game playing is in fact more balanced, then I'd consider the 6600GT. But with AA/AF turned on, those are some sickening differences in HL2.

I apologize if I am coming across as an ATI fanboy. Believe me, I get the same response over at Rage3D whenever I recommend a 6800GS :) I'm an advocate of best bang for the buck in a person's price range, regardless of the brand.

wow, that's a wicked 6800, my guess is that they are getting the 6800 ultra rejects also, and i'd go with the 6800 non-ultra as well, it's better than both, and around the same price, however, if you had only those 2 as an option, go with the 6600 GT, it's bound to perform better in dx9 titles, and it has ps3.0 not just 2.0 like the 5900 ultra, which actually doesn't have true 2.0 support and actually runs games horribly, most games (far cry, hl2, cs:s, halo) default to ps1.1 or ps1.4 with the 5900 ultra, basically, stay away from it, it was good in it's day, but not now

and no, the X700 pro isn't as good, my friend has one and it was on par with my 5900 ultra, and slightly worse than a 6600 GT

however after looking at the reviews, that apollo board is rubbish, just bad cores from 6800 ultras, i wouldn't touch it, go for a 6800 GS if they really ever are released in AGP, that'd be your best option, or the 6600 GT
